Lothar Moll, Director of pro clima in Germany and New Zealand, is a world leading building physicist and expert on airtightness systems. In 1994 he discovered the MVTR – moisture vapour transmission rate variable membrane, the Intelligent part of INTELLO, which became part of the patented pro clima Intelligent Airtightness System (IAS). According to the ecologicalbuildingsystems.com website, pro clima “lead the field in the development and manufacture of intelligent high performance sealing systems for thermal insulation in constructions”. In 2007, Lothar came to New Zealand and saw the need for the pro clima system here. Pro Clima NZ Ltd opened its doors in 2008 and has an ethical commitment to providing energy efficient, healthy, dry homes and buildings for New Zealanders.

Morena Māne! How did the accountant's #auckland house perform when modelled in the Passive House Planning Package (#phpp)?? The GJ Gardner build was actually better than Code by comparison, due to some 140 framing and an upgrade to better windows than the standard offering. It didn't overheat and its final delivered energy was under Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment Building for Climate Change 'Initial Cap.' The cumulative graphs show the energy saved, by the further improvements made to achieve a #healthy home, as follows; 1. Reducing timber in the frames using Winstone Wallboards Gib Fix system and only the minimum nogs/dwangs to support linings and claddings. Plus upgrading wall #insulation to the maximum available in the product range for the framing chosen. 2. Adding QuickSet proprietary edge and beam insulation. 3. Alternatively, using MAXRaft to provide a fully insulated slab instead of just insulating the beams and edges. 4. Recessing the Altus NZ Limited Pacific Thermal suite. 5. Replacing the aluminium windows with STÄRKE #upvc, but keeping the glass the same, allowing infiltration to reduce from 5 ach to 3 ach with a more airtight window system. Also replacing the below Code Velux skylights for ADLUX ones. 6. Adding an efficiently priced #mvhr system once airtightness was improved to recover heat from the extracted air. 7. Adding Pro Clima NZ Ltd Intello to provide airtightness of less than 1ach to get down into the realm of Passive House Institute Low-Energy Building Standard. Phase 1 completed! Now we need Phase 2; pricing to be able to calculate Phase 3; Return on Investment. I wonder where the client's sweet spot is? Remember there is no ROI for comfort. Comfort is incalculable, but definitely measurable!

//Project Update// Project is humming along, great visual progress to date. Few updates as we charge forward to meet our next milestone. Thanks to Pro Clima NZ Ltd & Simon Cator for the onsite training for their product we are installing over our RAB. Great to get the team together and ensure we install correctly. We are getting closer to having our roofing installation commence with some of our roof edge protection and scaffolding in place and material ready onsite. Watch this space- looking forward to getting a lid on this building as we get so much closer for the interior works to kick into gear.

MAKING DO WITH WHATS AT HAND As I complete my batch at Castle Hill I have been sleeping on site and wanted to cover the windows especially during the summer as the days were so long. I looked around the site for options and saw a decent offcut of Pro Clima NZ Ltd Mento 3000 and thought that will do nicely. This roof underlay is really blackout so perfect for keeping the morning light out. Big fan of Pro Clima products and love finding alternative uses for them. If you don't like black there is always their blue Solitex. I'm Graeme Jacobs a Christchurch based Architect specializing in high performance homes often using SIP PREFAB.
