Getting food to where it’s needed most

About us

The New Zealand Food Network (NZFN) is a not-for-profit organisation, founded to provide people in need with healthy food, through sharing bulk surplus and donated food. We collect quality surplus and donated bulk food from producers, growers and wholesalers around the country, and distribute it to food rescue organisations, iwi and charities across New Zealand, so that they may feed the communities they serve. We believe it is our collective responsibility to ensure everyone in New Zealand has access to healthy, nutritious food. While nutritious food is important to everyone, access to this food can be particularly challenging for those who may be disadvantaged, while food insecurity may have an impact on a range of physical and mental health issues. To help address this, the NZFN works with a range of food producers, manufacturers and wholesalers to source a range of fresh and healthy foods, including fruit, vegetables, and protein. Any organisation wishing to find out more about becoming involved in the Network should get in touch via www.nzfoodnetwork.org.nz

Some of our team had a great time recently volunteering at House of Science NZ in South Auckland. This NZ charity is focused on improving scientific literacy among Kiwi kids with tools like these Science Resource Kits! 🧪🔬 These awesome kits have everything a teacher needs to create fun, hands on lessons for their students across a range of topics. Even our team were keen to get stuck into some experiments, despite being there to help re pack them! It was great to support the important work that House of Science are doing for our future generations, while also learning how we can improve our volunteering experience in the NZFN warehouse. Thank you for having us! 💚 You can learn more about House of Science at their website: https://houseofscience.nz/ #volunteering #makinganimpact #communitysupport

Go Science!! South Auckland House of Science manager, interim West Auckland HoS manager

Last Friday, I was joined by a team from New Zealand Food Network. A sister company to Kiwi Harvest, NZFN is “getting food to where it’s needed most”. They redirect bulk unsellable but perfectly edible food from going to waste to those who need it around the motu. It was nice to hear how another organisation that also relies on volunteers operates and share ideas. They processed 10 kits including: 📏Measurement Matters / Te Whakahirahira o te Inenga  🎆Fireworks / Pahūahi (students get to burn chemicals to see what colours are produced) 🧲Magnetic Madness / Autō Pōrangi 🐝What’s the Buzz? / He Aha Tērā Huhū? (the bumblebee kit) 🚀3, 2, 1 Lift Off! / 3, 2, 1…Kua Rewa! (all about rockets). Thanks for your mahi, team! How about this cool initiative from our donor Bidfood New Zealand! ❄ (yes, pun intended) In addition to helping Bidfood make a difference with their surplus food, we've also been helping them repurpose these handy little ice packs! With their fresh salmon deliveries from the South Island creating a stream of inbound ice, Bidfood decided the packs could go on to serve their purpose elsewhere. Tapping into our nationwide network again, Bidfood now consolidate the ice packs for us to collect whenever we're next stopping by to collect their surplus food donations. From there, we redistribute the packs to certain Food Hubs, who use them to keep food parcels chilled during deliveries. This initiative really helps the reach of food support, as some recipients such as the elderly and disabled don’t have the means to collect the kai themselves 🙏 “The ice packs were very welcomed. We have used them in food parcels to keep them chilled on trips. Very handy... especially during the warmer months.” - Helen Holt, Operations Manager at Have a Heart Charitable Trust Through initiatives like this, within 12 months Bidfood New Zealand reduced their landfill from 12 Tonne right down to 1 Tonne and have successfully continued that journey for the last 4 years! We're grateful to help them along this journey, as well as to learn new solutions to share along the way ♻️ #donation #sustainability #communitysupport #makingadifference #foodrescue

Right now, our Food Hubs are facing a critical shortage.   While food rescue often sees peaks and troughs, we’re currently in a deep trough with very little stock available to support the increasing demand in the community.   If you work for or know of a food business with any surplus stock ready to be cleared, now is the perfect time to make a difference. Your contribution can go a long way in helping us fill this gap and feed more people in need.   Over the past 12 months, along with our Food Hubs, we've distributed 3.9 million kilos of surplus food, providing the equivalent of 8.6 million meals. However, we urgently need more donations to continue supporting our communities.   If you can help, please reach out to [email protected]   Any contribution makes a real difference, and as always, we are incredibly grateful for your ongoing support 💚 #foodrescue #foodinsecurity #foodwaste #foodsecurity #communitysupport #donate

Last week, our Ultigroup team spent a fantastic half-morning #volunteering with New Zealand Food Network and Pitch-In, helping to pack Kiwi fruit for distribution across #Aotearoa. Getting involved and contributing to the incredible mahi that NZFN does daily was a privilege. 🙌 We had such a fun team-building time working together and reflecting on the significance of food waste. It’s eye-opening to realise how much excellent food goes unused and how organisations like NZFN are making a real impact by redistributing it to those in need. Our team packed up 196 boxes and moved a total over 2,940kgs of food. That's more than 6,533 meal equivalents going into the community! #Grateful for the opportunity to lend a hand, #connect with such passionate people, and be part of a movement that fights food waste and food insecurity in New Zealand. 🍏💚 #NZFoodNetwork #Teamwork #FightFoodWaste #PitchIn #CommunitySupport #Ultigroup #NewZealand #Kiwi

Another real life example of how our food donors and hubs are supporting Kiwis through tough times. There are many situations in which we all need a helping hand, and with your donations to NZFN, more Kiwis like this food parcel recipient can receive the food support they need 💚 Thank you everyone for working with us to get good food to where it's needed most! ♻️ #foodsupport #foodinsecurity #foodsecurity #foodrescue #foodwaste #CommunitySupport

More fresh citrus for the South! 🍋🍊   This annual initiative from the Whangarei Lions Club involves members, volunteers and other local Lions Clubs coming together to gather and send surplus citrus fruit from the Northland region down to the South Island, where it doesn't grow so well. This year, we're stoked to be helping them nourish southern communities once again by distributing 72 boxes and over 1.2 tonnes of their citrus fruit donation from our Christchurch DC to our Food Hubs in the South Island.   We're truly grateful to partner with the Whangarei Lions Clubs as they continue to make an impact in our South Island communities! 🙌 #foodsecurity #foodrescue #foodsupport #communitysupport #makinganimpact

The impact made by Service Foods this year has been felt in communities throughout NZ, and we're proud to partner with them to help make it happen! Simplifying the donation process for food businesses and spreading their impact far and wide is something we love doing, and with the initiative of great partners like this, together, we can make a real difference for Kiwis in need ♻️🙌 #foodsecurity #foodwaste #foodinsecurity #foodrescue #socialimpact #communitysupport

At Service Foods, we take immense pride in serving businesses nationwide, and we firmly believe that great successes are best shared. In partnership with the New Zealand Food Network, we have supported 36 Food Hubs, provided the equivalent of 48,389 meals, and helped prevent over 57,000kg of CO2 emissions between January and June this year. Since July 2020, the NZFN’s extensive network has enabled the distribution of nearly 70 million meals across New Zealand, supporting over half a million people each month. We look forward to many more shared successes and are thankful to be able to do our part in providing for our communities.

A massive 25 tonnes of kai packed and prepped for Kiwis in need thanks to our volunteers in August! 💪 Last month we were gifted the time and mahi of an awesome volunteer army made up of staff from Sanitarium, Fonterra, Mars, Mars United Commerce, Enviro NZ, Mastercard, Kellanova. On average, each person packed more than 24 boxes of rescued food to be sent to our Food Hubs, a real impact for the community that we hope everyone is proud of! 👏 Thank you to all for your hard work and dedication! We couldn't operate the way we do without our volunteers, and the impact of those past and present continues to be felt by communities throughout NZ! 💚 #volunteering #foodrescue #foodwaste #foodsecurity #csr #communityimpact

Jack is back....again! 👑 A massive thanks to Crown Lift Trucks New Zealand, who kindly donated and dropped off another brand-new PTH50 pallet jack to NZFN via their give-away at the recent Cold Storage Association Conference in Queenstown! We were fortunate to have the Crown pallet jack prize from last years “Jack is Back” campaign passed on to us by the actual winner of the prize, a generous team member from Big Chill Distribution, and it's certainly had a lot of use in our Auckland DC since. This year.... the exact same winner was drawn from the hat! They decided to show the same kindness as the previous year and gifted us the pallet jack again to help our cause, this time for our Christchurch DC🙏 We're hugely grateful for this support, and we're stoked to have this reliable piece of equipment now in both of our warehouses, moving kai through our network! ♻ Thank you to everyone involved! #donation #foodrescue #makingadifference #makinganimpact
