How have the courts described and applied the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi, and in Aotearoa New Zealand today?   Te Hunga Rōia Māori o Aotearoa and the New Zealand Law Society Te Kāhui Ture o Aotearoa are co-hosting a panel discussion and presentation by Dr Carwyn Jones and Dr Damen Ward, authors of Treaty Law: Principles of the Treaty of Waitangi in Law and Practice, facilitated by Natalie Coates. Recently awarded the JF Northey Award for the Best Legal Book Published in 2023, Carwyn and Damen’s book analyses hundreds of judicial decisions relating to Te Tiriti in the higher courts and describes the courts’ jurisprudence over time. In judging the award the adjudicator said, “There has been nothing like it before” … “Put shortly, this book is a game-changer for all who have an interest in Aotearoa New Zealand's constitutional health.” The session, supported by Premium Partner Thomson Reuters New Zealand, will be hosted in person in Wellington and available online for other members of the profession via online streaming. There will also be an opportunity for networking post-event.
