Creating a City where everyone thrives

About us

At Hutt City Council our vision is to build a connected, resilient and inclusive city where all of our people thrive. Kia noho mai tēnei tāone hei pou herenga waka, hei pou herenga kaupapa, hei wāhi whai hua ki hōna iwi. We're at the heart of NZ's innovation economy and making the future is part of our DNA. From our earliest days adapting to our geography and setting up NZ's first Kohanga Reo, to setting global time standards and community-led housing partnerships homing those in need. In everything we do, we're led by our values of Manaakitanga, Kotahitanga and Rangatiratanga and our partnership with Mana Whenua. Every day our work enables our neighbourhoods to be more connected, healthy and resilient and we're harnessing the talent of our city to be carbon zero in 2050. We're a diverse and growing city that more and more people are choosing to call home - embracing our big back yard of trails, nature, sports and vibrant neighbourhoods. He waka eke noa.

Last week, more than 200 community representatives joined together to shape a shared vision for the future of Te Awa Kairangi ki Tai Lower Hutt at the City Summit 🏙️ ❤️ The summit started public engagement for Tō Tātou Tāone 2055/Our City 2055, an ambitious strategy setting out 30-year aspirations for our people and place. Participants heard from multiple speakers and took part in interactive workshops that were centred around the question “what can we do today that future generations will thank us for?” Insights from the speakers and contributions from the attendees, laid the foundation for the collective approach that will inform the development of Our City 2055 🙌 Thank you to everyone who attended and shared their thoughts and ideas. We've had a few slip remediation projects on the go this year and thanks to our dedicated team the remediation work on the Wainui Hill landslide finished last month! If you drove over the hill during the works you no doubt would have seen the team from Abseil Access Ltd in action! Rope Access Works is a specialised and high-risk kind of work. "Abseiling on rope on a loose rock face with live traffic below provides a great amount of challenge. We need to be proactive and improvise as the activities progress. This makes for an interesting and unique job, there's certainly an adrenaline rush!" says Sanjo Chinnan, Abseil Access Project Manager. Abseil Access was also responsible for building the temporary catch fences and working with the traffic management team to ensure road users were safe "It's a great sense of achievement seeing the final product and we're proud to contributing to the wider community by making their daily commute safer.

With hydroseeding complete, work has now wrapped up to remediate a slip on Harbour View Road 👏 A big thanks to the ENGEO team for their expertise and ongoing dedication to our projects. The efforts to foster a collaborative approach throughout the design and delivery phase has made for efficient and effective project delivery. And a special shoutout to the team from Halverson Civil Ltd who put in the hard mahi to get this site sorted, many of them are Hutt residents who enjoyed being able to contribute to the enhancement of their local community and built environment whilst being part of a supportive close-knit team. One of the team from Halverson is Rangatira Reva Pupuke, who was Construction Foreman for Harbour View. He’s a long-time, proud resident of the Hutt Valley who has been with Halverson Civil for over a decade and is a highly valued member of the Slope Stabilisation team. “Reva is a respected team leader who enjoys the daily support of his tight-knit team and working through the challenges that the onsite work presents.” says Paul Rogers, Halverson Civil Project Manager for Harbour View Road.

Thanks to the incredible mahi from the ENGEO and Geovert team, we recently completed work on another of our slip remediation projects along London Road, ahead of schedule despite challenging conditions 🙌 The teams collaborated with a nearby project, enabling efficient traffic management for residents and also allowing their High Reach Drill to be deployed, accelerating the drilling program 👷 Geovert team leader Sam Bollmann said, “Steep, slippery faces and blustering southerlies stood no chance with our highly skilled and determined rope access technicians Riley and Michael. It is thanks to them and the use of our High Reach Drill that we were able to deal with all manner of challenges that came our way. The result is something that we all take immense pride in, and it has been a great privilege to be able to support Hutt City Council in helping the local community." Well done everyone! It's great to see this work finished.

We are proud to announce the new name for the Naenae Pool and Fitness Centre - Te Ngaengae 💙 The new name has deep links to local rivers Waiwhetū and Te Awamutu and the creation of Te Whanganui a Tara. "Te Ngaengae grounds the pool in the history of Naenae and is a strong reminder of our heritage. "Te Ngaengae reflects the original Māori name of the suburb. This gives us a chance to celebrate the history of the area. "Te Ngaengae will be a critical and beloved community asset and central to the people of Naenae, Lower Hutt and the wider region," says Mayor Campbell Barry.
