Reviving the mauri | life force and vitality of our ocean and coastal communities through regenerative ocean farming
About us
Greenwave Aotearoa is pioneering regenerative ocean farming in New Zealand, sharing our knowledge, skills and opportunities to create flourishing ecosystems and economies that will leave our waters brimming with abundance for future generations. Partnering with GreenWave in the United States to adapt its highly successful model for Aotearoa New Zealand, we’re focusing on establishing a viable, scalable native seaweed supply chain that can be a powerful force in combating climate change, boosting biodiversity and creating regional jobs. Using the native brown seaweed Ecklonia radiata as a fundamental crop, we’re working to create an end-to-end supply chain, optimise hatchery production and productivity of seaweed farming, and lay the foundation for exponential sector growth. In doing so, we seek to reduce the uncertainty around the productivity of seaweed farming operations and provide the proof of concept for farming native seaweed at scale in Aotearoa New Zealand. Our programme of work is led by impact investment project developers, EnviroStrat, in collaboration with a network of partners including Ngāi Tai Ki Tāmaki, Ngāti Pūkenga, Premium Seas, University of Waikato, University of Auckland, AgriSea and the Ministry for Primary Industries.

We’re proud to be one of the solutions driven and led by EnviroStrat that seek to regenerate the vitality of our oceans and coastal communities. This week, we honour both World Oceans Day (8 June) and World Seaweed Day (4 June), and the many people who dedicate their time and energy alongside us in the field of regenerative oceans work. @unitednations @worldeconomicforum #WorldOceansDay #BigBlueFuture #naturebasedsolutions #naturepositive #impactinvestment #sustainabledevelopment #regeneration #blueeconomy #seaweed
“The ocean’s power of regeneration is remarkable - if we just offer it the chance.” - Sir David Attenborough Our oceans are so significant for life on Earth, yet so under threat with the combined effects of human activities and a changing climate. Righting the wrongs in our oceans is at the core of the work we do here at EnviroStrat. We develop solutions that bring vitality back to marine environments and coastal communities - from innovating new industries for Aotearoa New Zealand in regenerative ocean farming of seaweed and kina to scoping blue finance opportunities in Madagascar, preparing Vietnam’s Master Marine Spatial Plan framework or developing an investment case and implementation strategy for mussel farming in Southern California. So, today on World Oceans Day, we’re taking a moment to honour the rich and diverse life within our oceans that is well worth looking after and restoring. And we celebrate the work of all those who also take up the call of Sir Attenborough, by channeling human ingenuity to offer the oceans a chance to regenerate. @unitednations @worldeconomicforum #WorldOceansDay #BigBlueFuture #naturebasedsolutions #naturepositive #impactinvestment #sustainabledevelopment #regeneration #blueeconomy

Pilots are all about finding improvements and solutions. Our hatcheries recently branched into working with gametophyte cultures, as a solution for creating consistent kelp spools for mass seeding practices. Gametophytes are the microscopic life stage of kelps, which algae scientists, like us, find pretty exciting. Seeding spools with kelp gametophytes instead of spores offers an opportunity for enhanced control of growth conditions, leading to higher yields and faster establishment. This method reduces contamination risks and ensures more uniform seaweed growth, making it a superior choice for commercial seaweed cultivation. This will allow a whole new level of capability for post-pilot activities, ultimately allowing us to support farming activities on a much larger scale. Thanks for your brilliant work on this advancement Peter Randrup, Rebecca Lawton, Marie Magnusson, and Ryan Marchington. #sustainableaquaculture #innovation #blueinvestment #blueeconomy #bluepilotproject #naturepositive #regeneration #seaweed #sustainableoceans

April was full of activity for Greenwave Aotearoa. We recently posted about our latest outplanting event. And we’ve since had another eventful gathering of our team for the mass spore and seeding day at our Precess Point Hatchery. Spore release & seeding is the initial and crucial step in seaweed farming, in which mature reproductive seaweeds disperse thousands of spores into water which settle onto substrate to begin the growth of new seaweed plants. With a lot of new talent in the team, this was the first time we had the opportunity to work closely side by side. While collecting critical metrics such as sorus processing rates and man hours required for mass seeding events, the hatchery was buzzing as we shared knowledge from our various experiences and spoke of ideas for the future. Our two hatcheries are collaborating to churn out high-quality sporophyte-laden spools of seedlings. And we will continue mass seeding days in order to supercharge our 2024 farming season. — Greenwave Aotearoa exists through the innovation of EnviroStrat - an environmental advisory, blue economy impact investor, and creator of game changing nature-positive businesses that foster regenerative ecosystems, communities, and economies. In early April we completed our first outplanting for 2024 with our passionate teams from Preeces Point and Sulphur Point hatcheries. We loved having our newest team member Ryan Marchington, Aquaculture Science and Operations Lead, a part of this outplanting, as well as Peter Randrup, Rebecca Lawton, Marie Magnusson, and Lucas Evans from the Greenwave Aotearoa Team. This outplanting was a success, with approximately 800 meters of seeded line deployed. Check out the video above to see the novel approach that the team built to reduce heat stress on the spools and improve survival. We now look forward to the cooler weather, which bodes well for farming conditions and will enable us to accelerate outplanting activities in the coming months. And we’ll patiently watch the seaweed grow until harvest, which will take place around November. Here's to a prosperous growing season for our beloved Ecklonia! #sustainableaquaculture #innovation #blueinvestment #blueeconomy #bluepilotproject #naturepositive #regeneration #seaweed #sustainableoceans

We’ve recently made some big waves towards a sustainable seaweed sector for Aotearoa New Zealand. 🌊 In the sea: We're thrilled to announce our first successful harvest! This is a HUGE milestone, as it demonstrates the feasibility of cultivating 𝘌𝘤𝘬𝘭𝘰𝘯𝘪𝘢 𝘳𝘢𝘥𝘪𝘢𝘵𝘢, our native seaweed species, from start (spores) to finish, in the wilds of New Zealand's oceans. From the initial stage of settling seedlings on to grow ropes en masse, to nurturing their growth into flourishing adult plants upon outplanting in the ocean, our team has worked tirelessly to bring this vision to life. We're incredibly proud of this achievement. 🌏 Reviving the mauri of our oceans: We’re not just cultivating seaweed. We’re also nurturing the health of our marine ecosystems. Recent scientific analysis, in partnership with University of Waikato, tested tissue samples of the 𝘌𝘤𝘬𝘭𝘰𝘯𝘪𝘢 𝘳𝘢𝘥𝘪𝘢𝘵𝘢 seaweed that was grown and harvested from our marine farms in the Hauraki Gulf. The goal of testing was to understand the composition of our seaweed’s biomass and assess its potential for positive environmental impact, particularly its ability to remove nitrogen, phosphate, and heavy metals from the ocean. Our findings indicate similarities with wild Ecklonia, which is great news! These results are crucial for modeling both nutrient removal and product development. #SeaweedFarming #blueeconomy #aquaculture #seaweed #seaweedresearch #environment #naturebasedsolutions #sustainablegrowth #regeneration
