About us

Founded in Kansas, United States in 1989, Gary Burrell and Min Kao launched their first product – a GPS unit which signified the birth of Garmin. Since then, Garmin has become a truly global brand and offers innovative engineering products in 5 diverse segments covering Automotive, Aviation, Fitness, Marine and Outdoor Recreation. 2014 marked the birth of Garmin New Zealand. Since then, we’ve grown into a business with around 100 associates and in 2022 moved into our new facility here in Grey Lynn, Central Auckland. Headquartered in the ‘City of Sails’, our engineering focus is on Garmin marine products, marine communication, Fusion® marine audio and Garmin Guardian asset protection. Garmin makes products that are engineered on the inside for life on the outside. Our culture for honesty, integrity and respect allows for an attractive working environment where we are committed to creating products with compelling design, superior quality and best value. We do this so our customers can make the most of the time they spend pursuing their passions. We believe that every day is an opportunity to innovate and a chance to beat yesterday.

Congrats 👏 to Senior Design Engineer, Sumia Wang, for her recent performance at the Taupo Marathon. Sumia took more than one hour off her previous personal best time, placing 26th in her age group in an impressive 3h56m. She credits much of her improvement to following a personalized training plan from Garmin Coach – a free service from Garmin Connect that syncs with compatible Garmin wearables, with plans curated by former Olympians and elite athletes to help you reach your goal. Well done, Sumia!

A big congrats 👏 to Auckland-based yachties and Garmin Ambassadors Francesco Kayrouz and Hamish McLaren for winning the silver medal 🥈 in the Junior World Championships that were recently held in Galicia, Spain. The Kiwi 49er crew have spent much of the past year working towards their goal and this achievement is a significant stepping stone as they build toward their aspirations of taking part in the 2028 Los Angeles Summer Olympics.

This past Sunday saw 15 Garmin New Zealand associates line up for the annual Waterfront running series on Auckland's Tamaki Drive. In near perfect running conditions, Sumia Wang, Peter Stevens and Rick Kahts turned in personal best performances across the 10 km and half marathon events. Well done to everyone who took part! 👏
