Food Waste Innovation is University of Otago Research Theme. We measure food waste, develop reduction strategies, apply innovative technology, and work to modify producer and consumer behaviour. We work collaboratively with stakeholders and supporters in the public and private sector. Food Waste Innovation's goal is to harness the best scientific expertise to provide effective solutions to Aotearoa's food waste problems. Our research is already providing a credible evidence base for decision-makers in New Zealand: Advising government and international committees on waste reduction targets, measurements and policies Communicating to the New Zealand public about reduction initiatives Providing consultancy services on waste-related issues to councils, businesses and industry organisations

We are thrilled to see the first published report from Aotearoa's National Food Waste Reduction programme, written by our own summer research scholar, Charli Christensen, and Waste-Ed with Kate . The project tested the effectiveness of using emails versus text messages to evaluate the impact of Waste-Ed with Kate 'Food Lovers Master Classes'. These classes are designed to help participants to reduce their food waste. The project findings suggested that text messges were far more effective than emails for follow ups with participants 3 and 6 weeks after their class. It also found the classes were effective in helping participants to reduce their food waste. See the full report here: https://lnkd.in/gzfTXqtz

Food waste and food systems Researcher | Research Assistant for the Office of the Prime Minister's Chief Science Advisor
So great to be working with my Otago Food Waste Innovation buddy Jessica O'Connor on this very important project.
Like many PhD students, I will be finishing my thesis a bit later than originally planned... But this time it is because I am working as an intern on the upcoming Food Loss and Waste prevention report with the talented people at the OPMCSA. There are some impactful possibilities for addressing food loss and waste issues in Aotearoa across our food systems. Keep an eye out for the upcoming report 👀 https://lnkd.in/ezMb8pQf Juliet Gerrard, Susie Meade, Rebecca Benson, Jacques de Satgé, Lysea Haggie, Carolle Varughese, Trixie Croad #foodwaste #foodloss https://lnkd.in/e_QZ5TpT

We are delighted to announce a $15M boost for our work to reduce the devastating impact of food loss and waste has on the planet, thanks to catalytic funding by Ballmer Group. https://lnkd.in/eRnHuXvc This funding will support our essential work with five of our international partners in tackling #FoodLoss and #Waste over the next three years, through existing Voluntary Agreements in #Mexico, #SouthAfrica, #Indonesia and #Australia, and help launch a brand new food waste voluntary agreement in #Brazil. “This funding is an absolute game-changer, and the largest philanthropic donation WRAP has received for our work around the world. It marks a transformational moment, bringing substantial, multi-year funding to scale up the impact of food waste voluntary agreements around the world. We are incredibly grateful to The Ballmer Group for the funding at this critical time, with just six years left to halve food waste by 2030.” David Rogers, our International Director. Food waste across supply chains and within the home is responsible for around 10% of all Greenhouse Gas (#GHG) #emissions. WRAP has helped to establish and supports six food pacts, building from the blueprint of the Courtauld 2030 model. Together, this international network provides a co-ordinated group of actors aligned to a shared ambition, mirroring the approach we instigated to tackle plastic pollution through a series of national Plastics Pacts.
