10 years ago today, Malaysian Airlines flight MH17 was brought down over Eastern Ukraine, on route from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur. On board were 283 passengers and 15 crew members. These 298 innocent people were robbed of their lives. Many are gathering from all over the world - including New Zealand - at the National MH17 Monument in Vijfhuizen. Here in Wellington, together with the Malaysian High Commission and the Australian High Commission, we held an afternoon tea at the Netherlands Residence to commemorate this sad day. We reaffirm that the Netherlands remains committed to establishing the truth of what happened, achieving justice for the victims and their families, and holding those responsible to account. The 2024 NATO Summit in Washington has now drawn to a close. 2024 marks 75 years of the NATO alliance. 75 years on, the war in Ukraine shows that NATO has lost none of its importance. It is and remains the cornerstone of our collective defence and security. The Netherlands is proud to be a founding member and ally. During the busy Summit, we were glad to see the new Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof had the chance to meet with the New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon 🇳🇱🤝🇳🇿. We welcome New Zealand’s annnouncement of a further NZD$16 million in support to Ukraine. #NATOSummit #1NATO75years

Excited to introduce the delegation who represented the Netherlands in the annual New Zealand Model United Nations. On Friday, our three delegates received a briefing on Dutch foreign policy, the work of Embassies, and the Dutch approach to multilateralism. We wished them all the best for NZ MUN over the weekend! 🇳🇱🧡🇺🇳 Also a big thank you to the volunteers at UN Youth New Zealand for all their hard work in organising this year’s edition. #UnitedNations #Diplomacy #NLinNZ

🎬Ko au te Awa, ko te Awa ko au – I Am The River, The River Is Me has officially premiered in Aotearoa! The Whanganui river was the first river in the world to be recognised as a legal person. The film follows Māori river guardian Ned Tapa on a five-day canoe trip down this sacred river, joined by a First Nations Elder from Australia and his daughter, who are activists to saving their own dying river back home. We are proud to support this film at the Doc Edge festival, and to celebrate the premiere in Christchurch with the presence of the filmmakers petr lom and Corinne van Egeraat all the way from the Netherlands 🇳🇱, as well the film’s protagonists and their whānau from Whanganui. Congratulations to everyone involved in making this film, delivering a crucial and urgent message: we must take care of our waterways, and give proper acknowledgement for Indigenous knowledge and ways of being that have protected our environment for generations. 🌏 🎥Curious? The film will be screening as part of DocEdge in: 📍Christchurch 🗓️ 28th June 📍Wellington 🗓️ 3rd July 📍Auckland 🗓️ 4th July And online! 👉 https://docedge.nz Water New Zealand Department of Conservation (DOC) Ministerie van Buitenlandse Zaken ChristchurchNZ

It’s becoming a tradition: our annual welcoming reception for the new diplomatic cohort from the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs & Trade at the Netherlands Ambassador’s Residence. Yesterday, we were also honored with the presence of former Dutch diplomat Herman Knippenberg. His story, showcased in the Netflix show ‘The Serpent’, serves as an example for the critical role Embassies can play. Herman’s key messages of advice to the young (and older) diplomats in the room: be a team player, listen to your conscience and dare to speak up when it’s needed! #NLinNZ

The annual NZ Fieldays® is always a great opportunity for our Embassy team to (re)connect with the many Dutch businesses and nationals working in the food and agriculture space in New Zealand. It’s also a place to learn about the latest developments in agri-innovation, and to meet and exhange ideas with colleagues from the New Zealand government and other delegations. Thanks to everyone involved - we’re looking back on a successful event and look forward to building further on the connections made last week. This year marks the 80th anniversary of D-Day, June 6, 1944, a pivotal moment in history. In New Zealand, Boyd Klap CNZM, QSO, COON, COM spoke at a commemorative dinner at the Wellington Club. Among the attendees were two WWII veterans, as well as allied forces representatives. Boyd, who was 17 when WWII ended, shared his experiences as a resistance courier in the Netherlands. Reflecting on the future and the challenges to democracy worldwide, Boyd quoted President Obama: “If we want democracy to flourish, we will have to fight for it.” I couldn’t agree more. #StrongerTogether
