📢 SSE plc is driving action to achieve the global #3xRenewabels target SSE plc is a leading renewable energy developer, owner, and operator in the UK and Ireland generating over 10,200 GWh of renewable energy per year. As part of their commitment to the global tripling target, SSE plc is doubling their installed renewable energy capacity to 8GW by 2026 and have set ambitious targets to treble capacity to over 13GW by 2031, increasing output fivefold to over 50TWh annually – enough to power an incredible 20 million homes each year. Now, SSE plc has joined GRA’s #Time4Action campaign to accelerate action on the global target to triple renewable energy capacity by 2030. “The phenomenal support for the tripling up and doubling down agenda from countries all over the world was hugely important, but signalling intent is the easy bit. The scale of the task at hand is enormous and the emphasis now has to be on delivery of projects on the ground at an unprecedented pace. “That will require an urgent focus on unlocking finance, mobilising supply chains, accelerating permitting, and building grid capacity. Moving into practical implementation mode is now critical and we’re pleased to be supporting this policy agenda while continuing to deliver our own £20bn plus investment programme,” said Alistair Phillips-Davies, Chief Executive of SSE plc. There is no doubt that we can and will deploy wind and solar power at a huge scale. But what happens when the sun does not shine and the wind does not blow? ☀ 🍃 The primary source of stored energy on electricity grids today - at well over 90% of energy stored - is pumped storage hydropower (PSH). But despite being proven and cost-effective, the deployment of PSH is not keeping pace with the increased demand for both long duration storage and the other services that are needed to provide system flexibility.
