A national anthem is a generally patriotic song that is appointed as an official national song by the government. The oldest national anthem is Great Britain's "God Save the Queen," which was first called the national anthem in the early 19th century although the song was in use from the mid-18th century.

During the 19th and early 20th centuries, with the rise of the national state, most countries have adopted a national anthem.

Question: Where do we put the European anthem? Nations aren't the only entities with anthems; as I just mentioned, Europe has one, and some other entities have them as well (e.g. isn't there an anthem for the International Olympic movement?). I'd say this page would be much better with most if not all of its content moved to anthem. -- SJK
