Lingua franca

Lingua franca (in Italian Frankish language) is a language adopted as a common means of communication between people whose native languages are different.

In the past Latin and French served as lingua franca, now English does. In some regions of the world, there are other languages that have this same function, for example Swahili in Eastern Africa.
