Imad Mughniyeh is a Lebanese terrorist with a long history of targeting Israeli and American targets. He is the head of the special overseas operations for Hizbullah. He is wanted for the 1992 bombing of the Israeli embassy in Argentina that killed 92, and for the assassination of the CIA's Beirut station head in 1984. He is accussed of participating in the 1983 suicide bombing of the American embassy in Beirut, the 1984 bombing of the U.S. Embassy Annex in Beirut, a 1985 assassination attempt of the Emir of Kuwait, the hijacking of a Kuwaiti airliner in 1988, a 1997 plot to destroy an El-Al flight leaving Tel Aviv, and the kidnapping of three Israeli soldiers in 2000.
In August 2001, Israeli military intelligence warned of an unprecedented massive terror attack after following leads related to Mughniyeh. The Israelis have since accused him of being the mastermind behind the attack of September 11. Furthermore, they have claimed Mughniyeh has recently met with Iraqi intelligence, and that it was likely Iraq that was behind the attack.
