🌍☕ No Forest – No Coffee Meet Munisa Usman and Tahir Malim Saliya from Dello Mena, Ethiopia. They rely on cultivating coffee on the edges of the rainforest in the Bale Mountains. However, the exclusive Arabica coffee from Ethiopia is under threat due to deforestation. 🌳😟 A century ago, one-third of Ethiopia was covered by forest. Today, only 15% remains, threatening both wildlife and plant life. Arabica beans thrive in the shade under forest trees, and without this shade, it becomes too hot for coffee plants to survive. Good News! 🎉 In the past decade, significant efforts have brought new hope for Ethiopia's precious rainforest. Supported by Farm Africa, NICFI, and the Norwegian Embassy in Ethiopia, Ethiopians have planted millions of trees, and forest cover is on the rise. The goal is to have 30% of Ethiopia covered in forest again by 2030. 🌲🌳 This is a great example of the positive results of development cooperation! 🌍🤝 Did you know... - Ethiopia is Africa's largest coffee producer, with 4 million small farmers growing coffee beans. Half of the production is for the national market, while the other half is exported. Coffee is Ethiopia's largest export commodity. - Ethiopia aims to restore its forest cover to the levels of a century ago, requiring the planting of forests over 170,000 km². This would ultimately cover over 340,000 km² – an area nearly the size of Germany. - Poverty is the primary driver of deforestation. Small farmers clear forests to cultivate land and provide food for their families. Trees are also cut down for firewood. Additionally, cattle and other grazing animals roam freely, preventing forest regrowth. - Norway has partnered with Ethiopia on forest conservation and restoration for more than ten years, and Ethiopia is making significant progress towards the 30% forest cover goal. 🌍🤝 Learn more about this crucial issue by watching our new film on the subject, showcasing the challenges and the inspiring efforts to save Ethiopia's rainforests and preserve the future of Arabica coffee. 🎥🍿 See the full video here: https://lnkd.in/dh3TAcWH #Environment #Sustainability #Coffee #Deforestation #Ethiopia #Conservation #ClimateAction #GreenInitiatives #Norway #ArabicaCoffee #FarmAfrica #NICFI #OTFF

🌍 Did you know there are wolves in Africa? Yes, indeed! The Ethiopian wolf, the most endangered predator in Africa, resides in the Ethiopian highlands. Unfortunately, only 450 of these majestic creatures remain due to deforestation. Deforestation, driven by poverty and the need for farmland, has severely impacted Ethiopia's wildlife and forest cover. However, there is hope! 🇪🇹 The Ethiopian government, in collaboration with @NICFI (Norway's International Climate and Forest Initiative) and @FarmAfrica, is working tirelessly to restore and preserve Ethiopia's precious forests, especially in the Bale Mountains. 🌱 Together, we aim to plant forests to cover as much land as they did a hundred years ago. This ambitious goal means planting on 170,000 km², ultimately covering over 340,000 km² – an area almost the size of Germany. 👏 With over ten years of cooperation with Norway, Ethiopia is well on its way to achieving a 30% forest cover, ensuring better living conditions for both wildlife and local communities. And at the same time preserving the water source in the Bale Mountains for over 12 million people in East Africa. 🌳🐺 See the full video here: https://lnkd.in/dhGTwg2s #Ethiopia #Conservation #NICFI #FarmAfrica #Environment #Sustainability #BaleMountains #ForestRestoration #WildlifeConservation #ClimateAction #OTFF

🌿 From Coca Farming to Rainforest Protection: A Success Story in Colombia 🌿 Once part of an illegal and destructive trade that endangered both lives and nature, former coca farmers Flor Acevedo and José Munar have now turned to sustainable and legal livelihoods, harnessing the treasures of the Amazon rainforest for better purposes. Through the support of the Colombian environmental organization @FCDS and international partners like @NICFI, Flor and José are leading the way in rainforest conservation. They are part of local communities that have received assistance to establish eco-friendly businesses. These include: 🐝 Bee farms and honey production 🌿 Production of forest-friendly oils from palm trees 🐜 Creating natural fertilizers from black soldier ants 🍨 Utilizing forest fruits for desserts "We work closely with communities, offering alternatives to coca cultivation and deforestation," says Angela Rojas, the regional coordinator of FCDS. The organization monitors deforestation closely, conducting regular overflights over the Eastern Colombian Amazon. The Amazon faces pressure from cattle ranchers, coca growers, miners, illegal loggers, and land grabbers, with land grabbing being the most significant threat. However, Colombia is making strides in protecting the rainforest with the support of Norway and other international allies. Did you know? 🌍 Colombia is home to 10% of the world's plant and animal species. ⚔️ Over 50 years of armed conflict prevented resource extraction, leaving much of the rainforest untouched until deforestation surged after the 2016 peace agreement. 🪵 Cattle ranching, industrial agriculture, coca plantations, and mining are the biggest threats to the rainforest and its inhabitants. 💔 In 2022, Colombia had the highest number of murders of indigenous people, environmental activists, and land rights defenders (60), according to Global Witness. 🌳 #RainforestProtection #SustainableDevelopment #Conservation #Colombia #FCDS #NICFI #OTFF
