Korean researchers build 8 kW solid oxide electrolysis cell that can produce 5.7 kg of hydrogen per day ◾ The Korea Institute of Energy Research (KIER) announced a group of its scientists developed an 8 kW solid oxide electrolysis cell (SOEC) that can reportedly produce more than 5 kg of hydrogen per day. ◾ SOEC systems usually rely on a solid oxide, or ceramic, to produce hydrogen and oxygen. They use water supplied at the cathode to separate hydrogen from water in an external separation unit, with the hydroxide ions flowing through an aqueous electrolyte to the anode to generate oxygen. ◾ “The SOEC technology, which electrolyzes high-temperature steam into hydrogen and oxygen, is considered a high-efficiency hydrogen production technology that can reduce electricity consumption by more than 25% compared to other electrolysis methods when applied to places with a large demand for hydrogen and/or a large steam supply. ◾ They built the SOEC stack by layering ceramic cells, separator plates, and sealing materials. Its special feature is the separator plate, for which the academics adopted a press forming method that reportedly reduces production costs and time. This technique was used to create channels that enable a proper flow of hydrogen and oxygen in the system. ◾ “While the existing process could produce a maximum of 100 separator plates per day, using the press forming method allows for the production of more than 1,000 plates per day, thus improving both the manufacturing cost and time,” they explained. ◾ The group claims it was also able to maximize the contact area between the cell and the separator plate, which purportedly ensures more uniform performance, and to seal the stacked components via brazing technology. “This approach ensures that the stack can minimize hydrogen leakage even in the face of thermal shock or rapid temperature changes, thus maintaining stable performance,” it emphasized. ◾ Through a series of tests, the system was found to provide stable operation for 2,500 h and to supply 5.7 kg of hydrogen per day. At the Battery Symposium held in Osaka last year, I demonstrated that a sodium-ion battery cathode material with a discharge capacity of 250 mAh/g at 4 V class and a full cell using this material showed an energy density equivalent to that of LFP. Cycle life is also good However, this material has two drawbacks. One was that it was sodium-deficient and required pre-doping. It’s means 250mAh/g but it need predoping. The other was the use of expensive Ni and Co, although only a little. 　I evaluated a coin cell of cathode material No. 4046 for sodium-ion batteries synthesized a week ago. This cathode material does not use expensive materials such as Ni and Co at all. It also has no sodium deficiency and does not require pre-doping. The capacity of this material reaches 200mAh/g without predoping. The voltage system is 4V class. This means it is easier to use and can be made at much lower cost. 　I intend to present these results at the next Battery Symposium in Kyoto, Japan.

Chemical Vapor Deposition takes the lead in the race to scale up graphene production. With just methane gas and a copper substrate, in the absence of oxygen, high quality graphene emerges. Underlying paper: https://lnkd.in/gUmubjvZ Abstract Chemical vapour deposition (CVD) synthesis of graphene on copper has been broadly adopted since the first demonstration of this process. However, widespread use of CVD-grown graphene for basic science and applications has been hindered by challenges with reproducibility and quality. Here we identify trace oxygen as a key factor determining the growth trajectory and quality for graphene grown by low-pressure CVD. Oxygen-free chemical vapour deposition (OF-CVD) synthesis is fast and highly reproducible, with kinetics that can be described by a compact model, whereas adding trace oxygen leads to suppressed nucleation and slower/incomplete growth. Oxygen affects graphene quality as assessed by surface contamination, emergence of the Raman D peak and decrease in electrical conductivity. Epitaxial graphene grown in oxygen-free conditions is contamination-free and shows no detectable D peak. After dry transfer and boron nitride encapsulation, it shows room-temperature electrical-transport behaviour close to that of exfoliated graphene. A graphite-gated device shows well-developed integer and fractional quantum Hall effects. By highlighting the importance of eliminating trace oxygen, this work provides guidance for future CVD system design and operation.
