Today I participated at the official inaugration of our ammonia import terminal in Brunsbüttel, Germany. As the world’s largest shipper and distributer of ammonia, Yara Clean Ammonia (YCA) is in a pole position to secure low-emission ammonia supply to Germany, at competitive prices. With its leading global ammonia position, Yara can help kick-start the German hydrogen economy, laying the ground for a net zero future. Up to 3 million tonnes of low-CO2 ammonia can be imported annually via the terminal in Brunsbüttel. This would correspond to 530,000 tonnes of hydrogen or around 5% of the total European hydrogen target for 2030. YCA continous to take concrete actions helping decarbonizing, making the energy transition a reality!

Last week, during UN Climate Week, our CEO, Hans-Olav Raen, spoke about Yara Clean Ammonia’s dedication to zero-emission shipping and the urgency for immediate action in the sector. The key message throughout the event was clear, the future of maritime decarbonization depends on taking concrete steps now. To hit the 2030 targets, there’s a real need for clear regulations from the IMO. Without these, the industry can’t unlock the investments needed to scale clean fuels like renewable and low-carbon ammonia. Our team took part in key discussions, driving home some crucial points: 📢 We need consistent greenhouse gas rules so companies feel confident about investing in near-zero emission technology. 📢 There has to be financial support to close the cost gap between clean fuels and traditional ones, otherwise, demand for ammonia as a fuel won’t take off in time. 📢 It’s vital to establish clear guidelines for how we assess the life cycle of these fuels, so the industry knows what "near-zero emission" really means. 📢 Safety and training are a big priority — we need to make sure seafarers can handle ammonia safely. Through initiatives like ARISE, we’re working with partners to push these goals forward. The choices we make now will shape the future of shipping, and we’re committed to leading the way. Today is the International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste (IDAFLW), a global initiative by the United Nations to drive action toward reducing food loss and waste and transforming our food systems. 🌍   But why is this so crucial? 🤔 Food loss and waste threaten the sustainability of our food systems.   When we waste food, we also waste the water, land, energy, labor, and capital that go into producing it. Plus, food waste in landfills generates greenhouse gases, worsening climate change. This issue also impacts food security and drives up the cost of food. 📈   Nutrient deficiencies in crops are a major cause of food loss. Produce that doesn’t meet quality standards- whether it’s size, shape, or sweetness- often goes unsold and wasted. 🗑️   That’s why balanced crop nutrition is essential! It not only boosts crop quality and increases the chances of produce reaching consumers, but also extends shelf life, reducing food loss. 🥗   Learn more 👉 https://lnkd.in/ddQw9qN   #IDAFLW

As I head back from Climate Week NYC, I’m reflecting on the speed of the green transition. We are making progress, there’s lots of steps in the right direction, but recently, we have also seen examples of “green” projects being called off or delayed. But for those who believe the road to low carbon has been called off, you are mistaken. It has slowed down, yes, but the direction has not changed. Yet, we must confront a critical reality: there will be no green transition with red numbers. Meaning that private sector cannot drive this alone, in an unprofitable way. The transition is simply far too vast for any one company to tackle alone. A successful transition requires robust public frameworks and incentives to drive private investment, as traditional market mechanisms are still evolving. Politically set targets require political will and action - and then the private sector will do their part. So, when will the demand for low-carbon solutions create a large enough market? I don’t know, but what I do know is this: when laggards are penalized and must pay for their carbon emissions, the frontrunners will capitalize on their investments and position. The theme of this year’s Climate Week, “It’s Time”, resonates deeply as we approach one of the world’s most critical deadlines: the 2030 target. The time for decisive action and unified collaboration across all sectors is now. Finally, I’m excited to share a powerful example of such collaboration that took place this week: Yara Africa & Asia officially joined the Mobilizing Access to the Digital Economy (MADE) Alliance: Africa. In partnership with Mastercard, the African Development Bank Group, and other key players, this initiative will provide digital access for critical services to 100 million people and businesses in Africa over the next decade, driving the transformation of Africa’s food systems. #ClimateWeekNYC

This week, Yara joined Climate Week NYC, an important platform for catalyzing urgent climate action under the theme “It’s Time.” 📢 Our delegation engaged in impactful discussions with business leaders, policymakers, and civil society representatives about the hydrogen economy, ammonia as low-emission shipping fuel, food security, and how to utilize data and digital tools to make the food value chain more sustainable. 🌍 At Yara, we are committed to playing our part and believe that low-carbon ammonia is key to successfully accelerating the transition of the food system, shipping fuel and other energy-intensive industries. As the world’s largest distributor of ammonia, Yara has a significant competitive advantage and is uniquely positioned to choose the projects and solutions that create the most value. We believe low-carbon ammonia will play a key role for meeting the goals of the Paris Agreement and achieving rapid, profitable decarbonization. 💚 However, meaningful progress requires a united effort. The green transition must be supported by strong public frameworks, as traditional market mechanisms are still evolving. It’s vital that demand and supply develop in tandem, ensuring private companies have the necessary incentives to invest. 🤝 With a clear focus on the urgent action required, we leave Climate Week NYC with a sense of urgency and look forward to working together to turn our collective ambitions into action! 🎯 #ClimateWeekNYC takes place every year in partnership with United Nations General Assembly and is run in coordination with the United Nations and the City of New York.

🌊 🚢Today marks #WorldMaritimeDay, where the theme is Navigating the Future: Safety First! and commemorating the 50th anniversary of the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (#SOLAS) the key International Maritime Organization treaty regulating maritime safety .   As ammonia emerges as a vital solution for the maritime industry, its responsible handling is paramount. Ammonia, the second-largest chemical produced globally, has been transported safely for over a century, primarily for fertilizers that support food production. With its potential as an emission-free fuel for shipping, we must establish new safety standards and procedures to ensure its safe adoption.   At Yara Clean Ammonia, safety is our top priority. We are committed to integrating the lessons learned from ammonia in agriculture into maritime applications.   Through our partnership with ARISE, we conduct large-scale experiments to enhance modelling tools and gather critical data on ammonia’s behavior in marine environments, focusing on absorption rates, heat generation, aerosol formation, and cloud dispersion patterns. We also work on comprehensive test protocols and evaluate detection and mitigation technologies to ensure the safe bunkering, storage, and use of ammonia as a fuel, targeting zero operational emissions on open waters.   As we celebrate 50 years of SOLAS, together let’s prioritize safety in every aspect of maritime operations and embrace innovation to navigate towards a decarbonized future.
