The New Brighton Surf Lifesaving Club embodies a strong sense of community, rich history, and a deep connection to the rugged coast of New Brighton, Christchurch. As New Zealand's oldest surf lifesaving club, it has ensured beach-goer safety and fostered community for over 100 years. The sculptural timber structure creates spaces for community gatherings and offers public niches overlooking the redeveloped foreshore. This driftwood-like element sits on a robust boulder – housing lifesaving vehicles and equipment – with a facade featuring local New Zealand shells. The upper level includes an observation platform and roof terrace, providing inviting spaces for the community to thrive for years. Together with South By Southeast Architects, Snøhetta designed a new club building improving amenities for both the Club and the public, enhancing a sense of ownership and identity. In 2022, NBSLC was announced as the winner of the Public Architecture Category by Te Kāhui Whaihanga New Zealand Institute of Architects Awards Located on Maori lands in Aotearoa, New Zealand, we acknowledge and respect the Traditional Owners and Custodians, honoring Elders past, present, and future. It’s NOT A HOTEL. It’s our design for the new Rusutsu Resort. Nestled in the breathtaking landscape of Hokkaido island, Japan, Snøhetta unveils a peaceful sanctuary overlooking Japan’s famous Mount Yotei. Designed for Japanese hospitality group, NOT A HOTEL, Inc., this new model for a vacation home is located at the top of the famous ski resort, Rusutsu Resort, renowned for having the world's best powder snow throughout winter and as a relaxed outdoor and hiking destination during summer. The spatial design draws inspiration from the concept of reaching new heights, symbolized by the zenith—the highest imaginary point above a specific location on the celestial sphere. In architectural terms, this translates into creating spaces that elevate the human experience. “The social spaces engage the mind, while restful bedrooms rejuvenate the spirit. Our facilities, including the indoor and outdoor baths, gym, and sauna ensure the well-being of the body and aim to blur the lines between inside and outside, inviting nature in. The use of natural and local materials like stone and wood further embodies this project's holistic approach to human well-being and harmony with nature”, says Ana Castaingts, Lead Interior Architect at Snøhetta. We’re excited to unveil «Urban Blooms» in Innsbruck’s Old Town! This temporary installation, developed in collaboration with Innsbruck Tourismus, breathes new life into Kiebachgasse. From the initial discussions and brainstorming sessions in June to the opening on July 16th, this project showcases the power of collaboration and community participation. Volunteers, locals, and Snøhetta team members came together to transform the street, painting vibrant patterns that include game areas like chess, tic-tac-toe, and a jumping game for children. This addition brings a playful and engaging element to the space. Urban Blooms exemplifies Snøhetta’s commitment to activating public spaces and fostering community engagement. The installation features modules such as large bushes for shading, a lawn platform for relaxation, and an eating module. These elements can be configured into various green islands, encouraging informal public use and creating a welcoming environment for everyone. If you are in the area, make sure to stop by and enjoy this unique space and the spirit of community involvement that made it possible. 📸by: David Kienpointner / Snøhetta #urbanblooms #publicspace #communityengagement #snøhetta #innsbruck #innsbrucktourism #landscapedesign #urbanlandscape

With a climate future that will see more intense weather and drought, the Blanton Museum of Art grounds redesign adapted the existing structures and landscapes for this change. Rising above the trees, a canopy of petal sculptures creates a shaded microclimate with dappled light that follows the sun. Standing 40 feet tall, each petal is made of perforated panels and spans 30 feet in diameter, equipped with drainage that moves water from the upper canopy through the column down to grade, allowing for infiltration and passive irrigation into the surrounding subgrade. Their curving outlines, inspired by the arched vaults of the loggia that outline the museum, help highlight views of Ellsworth Kelly’s Austin and the Capitol. Snøhetta’s Cheng Gong and Emily Yan, along with Nan Fung Group's Eric Lai, attended the CREDAWARD ceremony in Shanghai to accept the Silver Award for AIRSIDE. AIRSIDE, developed by Nan Fung Group and designed by Snøhetta with Ronald Lu & Partners as the Executive Architect, is a LEED Platinum mixed-use tower set in the former airport district in Hong Kong. The design pays homage to the legacy of the textile industry, making legible the transformation of both the developer and Hong Kong itself from their focus on textile manufacturing to real estate development, finance, and technology. From the landscape to the facade, massing and interiors, the design evokes aspects of textiles and tailoring as qualities of fabrics with gestures like weaves, folds, tears, and cuts. As part of the ceremony, Snøhetta was also honored with an Quality Design Brand Leader Award. We are excited to announce the debut of our grounds redesign for The Blanton Museum of Art, detailed in this month's issue of Architectural Record! The design of Blanton’s new grounds and gardens was guided by an overall goal of creating a new, inclusive gathering space for Austin; one that unites the civic core of the city represented by the State Capital to the south and the historic fabric and artistic character of the University to the north. The Snøhetta designed Swarovski Playtower, situated in the magnificent park of the Swarovski Kristallwelten (Crystall World), offers a wide range of playing experiences in a five-story transparent structure. With a design focus on children and their needs, we contributed to the expansion of a unique destination with this new building typology. Since several summers now, the artists, clowns, and acrobats of Circus-Theater Roncalli have been transforming the Kristallwelten Park into a playscape for their circus arts. The Playtower has always given an excellent backdrop for exciting performances. One summer, the façade of the 20-meter-tall structure even served as a dance floor the Dazzling Dancers. Are you curious to see whether the Playtower will be backdrop or playscape this summer? The artists of Circus-Theater Roncalli will be presenting their breathtaking acrobatics and spectacular show acts from July 19 to September 1. "Is there anything more beautiful than a pure, sensitive line? The line is the indispensable skeleton of a painting" Anna-Eva Bergman At Snøhetta, we believe that art and architecture are intrinsically connected, and that collaboration within these fields lead to unique and inspiring creations. Since its beginning in 1989, Snøhetta has been committed to strengthening opportunities for working with talented artists, curators, art galleries and cultural institutions, with the aim of pushing the boundaries of creativity and creating spaces that inspire wonder and reflection. With this in mind, Snøhetta embarked on a close collaboration with the team at the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris. This resulted in several discussions on the links between art and architecture, and the design of a "contemplation booklet" for the "Anna-Eva Bergman Journey to the Interior" exhibition in Paris, and a strong connection to the Foundation Hartung-Bergman in Antibes, dedictad to the art of Anna-Eva Bergman and Hans Hartung. For the French Heritage Days in September 2023, the Hartung Bergman Foundation has loaned the upper part of the property so that the 30 members of Snøhetta Studio Paris, Kjetil Trædal Thorsen and Jorunn Sannes can create a collective experience linked to the spaces in which the couple Anna-Eva Bergman and Hans Hartung lived and created for two decades. Taking up the theme of light, which is omnipresent in Anna-Eva Bergman's work, Snøhetta has used the lines of the building designed by the couple to conceive a spatial device materialising the transition from the second to the third dimension. Snøhetta would like to thank the Hartung-Bergman Foundation for its warm welcome and invaluable support in organising this workshop. We would also like to thank the Foundation for its constructive and enriching dialogue with the agency, which enabled us to stage our reflections on the artist's work. As the summertime chugs along, we are gearing up for the opening of La Nube: the El Paso Children's Museum! The development of La Nube — Spanish for ‘the cloud’ — was directly influenced by input from the community. During the master planning process, a recurring theme was "Blue Sky Thinking." The sky is limitless, undefined by borders and holds clouds that can take an infinite number of shapes. The sky connects us all, regardless of culture, language, age, or ability. The new four-story, rippling building stands as a symbol for this universal connection and sparks curiosity about the possibilities that exist within this collective imagination.
