Skuld's Board of Directors met in Hamilton, Bermuda, on 5 November 2024, to discuss the upcoming P&I renewal for the policy year starting 20 February 2025. The Board noted an increase in claims in 2024, while the investment portfolio has contributed positively. Skuld’s growth strategy continues to deliver positive results, with premium income expected to exceed USD 565 million by year-end. Despite global inflation affecting claims and operational costs, the Board remains focused on maintaining a positive combined ratio.  The Board continues to support the strategy of individual rate adjustments based on performance without a general increase and has set a target of an overall adjustment of 5% of the estimated total call (ETC) to balance future expected claims costs. Members will be given a 5% credit on their mutual P&I premium when they renew with Skuld for the coming policy year. When the tides turn unexpectedly – what to do? This morning, Skuld Copenhagen held a seminar with Mills & Co Solicitors on force majeure, frustration, and legal remedies for unforeseen events. Alastair Moir and Jonathan Green presented two critical legal doctrines: frustration and force majeure. These doctrines offer parties mechanisms to mitigate liability when unforeseen events render contractual performance impossible or 'radically different' from what the parties had anticipated. In addition, how these doctrines interact with shipping contracts including calculating laytime and demurrage. Phillipa Reid spoke about the impact of unexpected events such as war, pandemics, or strikes and provided practical tools to handle related disputes.
