🌍 Did you know there are wolves in Africa? Yes, indeed! The Ethiopian wolf, the most endangered predator in Africa, resides in the Ethiopian highlands. Unfortunately, only 450 of these majestic creatures remain due to deforestation. Deforestation, driven by poverty and the need for farmland, has severely impacted Ethiopia's wildlife and forest cover. However, there is hope! 🇪🇹 The Ethiopian government, in collaboration with @NICFI (Norway's International Climate and Forest Initiative) and @FarmAfrica, is working tirelessly to restore and preserve Ethiopia's precious forests, especially in the Bale Mountains. 🌱 Together, we aim to plant forests to cover as much land as they did a hundred years ago. This ambitious goal means planting on 170,000 km², ultimately covering over 340,000 km² – an area almost the size of Germany. 👏 With over ten years of cooperation with Norway, Ethiopia is well on its way to achieving a 30% forest cover, ensuring better living conditions for both wildlife and local communities. 🌟 95 speakers, 12 conference sessions and conference participants from 45 countries at Oslo Tropical Forest Forum (#OTFF). It has been a pleasure to host two full days with discussions on the two most pressing global challenges confronting us: The climate crisis and the nature crisis. “Today, this room is filled with individuals and institutions that have contributed significantly to the momentum we are seeing today and the solutions going forward”, Minister of Climate and Environment Andreas Bjelland Eriksen, said in his closing speech. The collective experience of the room has shown what works and what is needed on our road to Belem: ⚡ We must sustain and strengthen the momentum for change, to go 𝗳𝘂𝗿𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿, 𝗳𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿.  🗨 We need to support countries in 𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗻 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀, politically and financially. To mobilise private finance and truly work with Indigenous Peoples on their terms. 🛑 We need to finish the job on 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗼𝗱𝗶𝘁𝘆-𝗱𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗻 𝗱𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻.  🔥 Lastly, we need to confront 𝗼𝗿𝗴𝗮𝗻𝗶𝘇𝗲𝗱 𝗻𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗰𝗿𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝗮𝘀 𝗮 𝗴𝗹𝗼𝗯𝗮𝗹 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁, undermining the tremendous job that everyone in this room is doing. 🌳 From dialogues on nature to dialogues in nature "Nature is our best ally," Susana Muhamad proclaimed in her opening speech at #OTFF. Climate and nature are inherently linked and mutually dependent. This statement resonated throughout the forum, and during the ministers’ dialogue on nature that Susana Muhamad hosted with the Minister of Climate and Environment Andreas Bjelland Eriksen. Following the dialogue, the minister invited participants to visit Østmarka, a newly designated national park in Oslo. Østmarka national park exemplifies the core principles of the upcoming COP16: protecting more nature and promoting sustainable use. 🌳 World leaders gathered at rainforest conference in Oslo “We have seen tremendous progress in the last two years”, Minister of Climate and Environment, Andreas Bjelland Eriksen, said at today’s opening of the Oslo Tropical Forest Forum (#OTFF). He also emphasised how we have to do more, faster, to stop deforestation. “At Oslo Tropical Forest Forum two years ago, we discussed the urgency of being only 8 years away from the 2030 goal to reverse global forest loss. Now it’s six.” At #OTFF, we are gathering ministers, policy makers, multilateral institutions, civil society, indigenous peoples, and private sector to advance action on protecting tropical forests. 🌳 Denne uken møtes klimaledere, politikere, urfolk og skogeksperter på en av verdens fremste regnskogkonferanser – Oslo Tropical Forest Forum.   - Å redusere avskogingen av regnskogen er ett av de mest effektive tiltakene verden kan ta for å redusere klimagassutslippene og bevare natur. For å få til dette trenger vi godt internasjonalt samarbeid, sier klima- og miljøminister Andreas Bjelland Eriksen.   Rundt 450 deltakere skal i løpet av de neste dagene diskutere tiltak og nye løsninger for å beskytte den livsviktige regnskogen.   - Denne konferansen gir relevante aktører muligheten til å diskutere de største utfordringene vi står ovenfor når det kommer til avskoging av regnskogen. Utslippsreduksjoner tilsvarende ti ganger norske utslipp! 🇲🇨 Det er resultatet av Indonesias innsats for å bremse avskoging i årene 2016 til 2020. Under president Jokowi er avskogingen redusert med hele 90 prosent. Norge har så langt bidratt til arbeidet med resultatbaserte utbetalinger på 156 millioner dollar. Denne uken har jeg vært i Jakarta og Medan for å lære mer om hvordan Indonesia har oppnådd så betydelige resultater og ikke minst for å diskutere hvordan vi kan styrke partnerskapet vårt fremover. Skogsektoren spiller en nøkkelrolle for at Indonesia skal nå sine klimamål, og planen FOLU Net Sink 2030 skal bidra til at det innen 2030 blir netto opptak av CO2 fra sektoren. Norge vil gjennom klima- og skoginitiativet fortsette å støtte ambisiøse regnskogland i arbeidet for å ta vare på verdens lunger. Fremover skal vi blant annet også tilgjengeliggjøre høyoppløselige satellittbilder, slik at indonesiske myndigheter kan fortsette å styrke kontroll og oppfølgning. Takk til Indonesia og særlig min gode kollega minister Siti Nurbaya for er flott besøk!

#Zambia signed a $30M agreement with the The World Bank's BioCarbon Initiative for Sustainable Forest Landscapes (ISFL) fund to reduce carbon emissions through sustainable landscape management. The agreement will provide significant support for rural communities. The program demonstrates how farmers can improve yields and build resilience while also restoring forest landscapes. NICFI is one of the founding ISFL donors with UK, US, Switzerland and Germany.
