European fossil-fired generation slides to record Q2 low. Fossil fuel generation was down by nearly a quarter compared with the same period last year, with both gas and coal experiencing similar falls of 27% and 28% respectively, and lignite declining by 12%. Solar output totalled 86.2 TWh across the quarter, a 15% increase on the year, while wind generation climbed 9% to 107.6 TWh. In total, renewables – comprising biomass, hydropower, wind, solar and waste – accounted for a record 55.7% of overall European power generation in Q2. Reporting by Laurence Walker. German gas storage facilities reached 85% of capacity on Saturday, 11 weeks earlier than the 1 October deadline. To help secure supply for the winter following Russian gas curtailments in 2022, the German government introduced intermediary storage targets, with facilities needing to reach 95% of capacity as of 1 November and should be at least 40% full by 1 February. Europe wide, gas facilities stood at 80.8% full on Saturday, according to Gas Infrastructure Europe, with the total capacity amounting to 1,130 TWh. In contrast to Germany, the EU requires sites to be filled to 90% by 1 November. Reporting by Kristin Schneider, Montel News. Have you read Nathan Witkop's excellent reporting on the insider trading alarm in Germany’s power market? Whistleblowers have revealed that companies allowed to balance the electricity grid are exploiting inside information for lucrative trades, potentially worth tens of millions of euros. Grid operators’ signals, not disclosed in real-time, give a select few a significant advantage in the intraday market, allowing them to predict and react to price shifts ahead of others. This practice, described as an "open secret" by industry insiders, highlights a critical gap in market transparency and regulatory oversight. Despite multiple complaints and studies confirming the misuse of balancing signals, the Federal Network Agency has yet to identify any breaches. Calls for real-time disclosure of grid imbalances are growing louder to ensure a level playing field for all market participants. Reporting by Nathan Witkop. Elections in the UK and France this week promise mixed signals for clean energy investment. In Montel's Energy Transition Weekly this Friday: A landslide win for the UK’s Labour Party promises to hasten decarbonisation, starting with a re-embrace of onshore wind. “We’re expecting them to go ahead with a flurry of smaller legislation.” But across the channel in France, renewable energy faces an ominous outlook, pending the outcome of parliamentary elections that could bring the far-right National Rally to power. Also in this week’s newsletter: the cost of grid congestion in Europe falls, but the volume of interventions rises; Germany clinches a plan to begin ordering “hydrogen-ready” power plants and a renewables specialist flips the script on commercial deals to develop clean energy, auctioning its offers to the best takers. I will be off for summer holidays from next week and return in August. My colleague Laurence Walker will look after the newsletter until then. UK Energy Secretary Claire Coutinho Highlights Conservative Party's Green Energy Plans 🌍💡 Ahead of Thursday's vote, Claire Coutinho expressed pride in the Conservative Party’s green energy record, citing significant progress in offshore wind energy. The party aims to balance net zero goals with the impact on people's lives. 𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗣𝗼𝗶𝗻𝘁𝘀: Offshore Wind Leadership: UK leads globally, second only to China. Transmission Acceleration Action Plan: Halve infrastructure build times and reduce connection delays. 300 Policies: Comprehensive approach to emissions reduction. 𝗢𝗽𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗻𝘀: Labour: Double onshore wind, triple solar, and quadruple offshore wind capacity by 2030. Liberal Democrats: Remove restrictions on solar and wind, aiming for 90% renewable electricity by 2030. SNP: Target 50% of Scotland’s energy from renewables by 2030. Grid constraints and long-term investor confidence remain key challenges.
