An initiative to accelerate the introduction of Connected, Cooperative, Automated solutions to improve logistic chains

Om oss

MODI is a European cross-border initiative to accelerate the introduction of Connected, Cooperative and Automated Mobility solutions to significantly improve logistic chains, set to Kick-Off in November 2022. The MODI project will demonstrate automated heavy-haul vehicles use cases on the motorway corridor from Rotterdam in the Netherlands to Moss in Norway, crossing four national borders and establishing terminal operations at four different harbours and terminals en route. Automated transport will significantly contribute to improving European transport and logistic chains. The MODI research project will make substantial steps toward identifying and resolving barriers preventing this from coming true. Introducing innovative, connected, cooperative and automated mobility (CCAM) can lead to many positive societal effects, such as safer and more efficient transport everywhere and for everyone. In mobility, the logistics sector is unique because of the scarcity of heavy truck drivers, the pressure to reduce costs and the high utilisation of vehicles compared to private passenger transport. Therefore, profitable business cases as a consequence of the automated vehicles for the logistics sector are already very likely. Even though the development of automated transport is accelerating, there are still many hindrances to overcome before we see a full-scale introduction of such transportation. These are related to the maturity of the technology itself but also to regulations, harmonisations, and social acceptance. The hindrances escalate when considering border-crossing transport.

From Rotterdam to Oslo the MODI Project makes a leap towards #autonomous driving! Crossing different countries entails engaging with infrastructures that are similar in form but markedly different in substance. Road signs, languages, toll systems, speed limits, and road legislations are merely a few of the variances encountered when traveling abroad, necessitating behavioral adaptation. With the advent of automated driving, such adjustments will need to occur without human intervention. Together with the truck manufacture DAF Trucks NV and the research organizations in the information and technology field Q-Free and SINTEF, GRUBER Logistics executed a test from #Rotterdam to #Oslo along the #NorthSeaBaltic and the #ScandinavianMediterranean #TENTCorridor. The Gruber Logistics’ driver took four days passing through infrastructures belonging to the Netherlands, Germany, Denmark, Sweden and Norway. The truck was equipped equipped with the latest ADAS system and sensors, including cameras to record relevant data during transportation including quality of road markings, signage recognition and #5G #connection quality. Currently, self-driving trucks are not yet part of our everyday lives, but at GRUBER Logistics work is being done every day to prepare the network and pave the way for automated driving. Special thanks to our colleagues Michael Blaas for successfully managing such big challenge, to Guus Arts for your great commitment at DAF Trucks NV and to our technological partners Ola Martin Lykkja and Petter Arnesen.
