2023 marks a significant milestone in Hurtigruten Foundation as we have more than doubled our fundraising from 2022. We give all the funds we raise to worthy causes, and I am delighted to announce that 17 projects will benefit from our latest bi-annual grant. Ahead of the new year, we’ll be giving a total of 1.5 million NOK to these exciting projects, providing vital funding towards marine mammal conservation, climate change research, marine litter clean-ups and community projects around the world. Additionally, as part of our ongoing mission to support local communities and drive sustainable change, the Hurtigruten Foundation will commit a further 660,000 NOK in 2024 and 2025 to projects benefiting from multi-year support. We are excited to support continued research by the world-renowned whale expert Ari Friedlaender at the University of California, Santa Cruz. The research team will measure the impacts of climate change on Ocean Sentinels, the humpback whale, in Antarctica. With this grant, his team will be able to continue collecting drone footage and biopsy samples from humpback whales throughout the feeding season over a three-year period while onboard HX Hurtigruten Expeditions ships.   The full list of recipients for the November 2023 grants are:  ● Aktiv i Friluft ● Grønlandske Børn - Kalaallit MeerartaatBørns VilkårFloortje Zonneveld and Sanne Moedt for their Arctic Research in Times of Change project  ● UCAR - The University Corporation for Atmospheric ResearchHowell Conservation Fund ● La Lupa. Hurtigruten Foundation Invites Coastal Communities to Apply for Funding   At Hurtigruten Foundation, we're on a mission to make a difference in the places Hurtigruten Group operates. Since our establishment in 2015, we've allocated 7.25 million NOK (approx. 633,500 euros) to fight climate change, strengthen local communities, and combat unsustainable mass tourism.   Today, we encourage coastal communities where Hurtigruten Group operates to apply for funding ahead of the November 1st deadline with our second round of grants this year. Our objective is clear: invest in the very communities our guests explore, fight climate change, strengthen local communities, and combat unsustainable mass tourism.   What makes this round even more special is the role our people play. In 2022, over one-third of our grant recipients were recommended by Hurtigruten Group employees. This speaks volumes about our commitment to giving back to the regions and communities we encounter daily.   If you, or an organization you know, are part of a community in one of the regions we operate, we invite you to learn more about the application process and guidelines on the Hurtigruten Foundation website.   Eligibility and Submission Requirements The deadline for submissions is November 1, 2023. The Foundation welcomes applications from any organisation undertaking projects or initiatives concerned with Hurtigruten Group’s regions of operation. Hurtigruten Expeditions celebrated a world-first in sustainable cruising yesterday as MS Roald Amundsen and MS Fridtjof Nansen, our pioneering battery-hybrid cruise ships, met for the first time. Against a backdrop of Cambridge Bay in the fabled Northwest Passage, our decks were adorned with flags and banners, a vibrant celebration shared by guests and crew alike. Navigating the historic Northwest Passage, the two ships, under the helm of Captain Terje Willassen and Captain Raymond Martinsen, captured the essence of past explorers' remarkable feats. Captain Martinsen poignantly expressed: "I'm struck by the achievements of past explorers in these remote places over a century ago. However, it's the enduring presence of today's inhabitants, surviving here since the Thule era, that commands my utmost respect."
