Christmas at Sea - in July - in a hot and steamy New York! The Gard Summer Santas from our New York office, Claudia Botero Götz, Müge Anber-Kontakis, Christine Thomas and Cheryl Acker were more than happy to join WISTA USA members at The Seamen's Church Institute to pack over 3,000 handmade knits donated by volunteers, as part of the Institute’s Christmas at Sea program. A great effort to ensure that US river mariners working aboard towboats have something to look forward to for Christmas. #ChristmasInJuly #ChristmasAtSea #marineinsurance #gard

Together, we enable sustainable maritime development.
Om oss
Gard is a shipowner-controlled provider of P&I, marine and energy insurance products. Founded in Arendal in Norway, it is one of the largest marine insurers in the world, offering shipowners and operators, shipyards, contractors and energy companies a breadth and choice of products not available anywhere else in one place. For more than 100 years, we have been insuring the global maritime industries for their whole range of risks. Today, Gard is the world’s largest P&I club and the second largest marine insurer – employing nearly 700 people in 13 global offices. For our employees, our dynamic business model and commitment to employee development and training, mean that we can offer the opportunity to gain world-class expertise, international experience and the flexibility to move between disciplines and roles. Assuranceforeningen Gard was founded in 1907 in Arendal. Its foundation was driven by owners of sailing ships’ reluctance to subsidise the liabilities arising from steam operations. In 2003, Gard Marine & Energy was formed to extend the products offered by the group.

In recent years, customs fines in Dakar have become both more frequent and more expensive and detained ships are often only released upon payment of a fine or posting security for payment. Our local correspondent, Budd Senegal, also report that vessels have faced further problems following the intensification of border controls by the Senegalese Immigration Services with additional scrutiny of crew passports and seamen's books. #senegal #dakar #customs #fines #marineinsurance #gard https://lnkd.in/eeqZq5qC

How can Gard make a difference? We had a chat with Junvic to hear his experience during his time at sea. Seafarers like Junvic experience some of the most dangerous working environments in the world. To work at sea means you will be exposed to mental and physical health issues, hard work and accidents. This is why it’s important to us at Gard to talk with seafarers and find out how we can help and prevent as much of this as possible. The first step towards change is to understand the issue. ▶ Listen to Junvic's story below. #crew #seafarer #gard #marineinsurance ▶ You can also read our Crew Claims Report 2024 to learn more: https://lnkd.in/eydWJRt8

Although we have seen a drop in the total number of piracy incidents for the first six months of 2024, there are concerns about Somali piracy activity, a rising number of incidents in Bangladesh and Indonesia, as well as an increase in violence against seafarers. In the first half of 2024, the IMB PRC received 60 reports of piracy and armed robbery, a decrease from 65 in the same period in 2023 whilst ReCAAP Information Sharing Centre reported a 16% reduction from the first half of 2023. However, both also reported an increase in severity and crew violence. #piracy #crew #seafarer #marineinsurance #gard https://lnkd.in/eWSCbAvR

The green transition presents the maritime industry with a regulatory challenge in that the current regulatory framework with liability and compensation regimes does not cater for new fuels and new cargoes. In their recent article, with contributions from Gard’s Tim Howse and Neil Henderson, the Global Maritime Forum summarises the regulatory framework for conventional fuels and looks at the gaps that need closing and how these can be addressed. https://lnkd.in/eNf_Syie

There has been an alarming spike in dengue cases around the world and vessels’ crews need to be aware of the risks and learn to recognise the symptoms – and to prevent the disease in the first place, how to keep mosquitos away. Climate change and shifting temperatures have expanded the habitat of the mosquitoes that carry the disease away from tropical and sub-tropical climates, allowing them to spread further north. And since there is no specific treatment for dengue, the best way to prevent it is to protect against mosquito bites. #seafarers #marineinsurance #gard #tropicaldisease https://lnkd.in/evz_gcf9

Last week’s workshop with the Hellenic Coast Guard was a great success! Arranged by the Greek Ministry of Maritime Affairs, and in collaboration with the Marine Environmental Protection Directorate, it was attended by various P&I Clubs and representatives from the International Group of P&I Clubs. Dimitris Giginis, Kleia Kokkini and Themis Ploumidakis from our office in Piraeus were among the participants who could learn more about the role and responsibilities of the Marine Environmental Protection Directorate in a maritime casualty. The workshop followed the Memorandum of Understanding entered into with the Greek authorities last year in an effort to widen the collaboration with the authorities. #marineinsurance #crisismanagement #casualty #gard
