Om oss
Welcome to the Faculty of Law at UiT The Arctic University of Norway. With a rich history dating back to 1984, our institution has been at the forefront of legal education and research in Northern Norway. Originally founded at the Institute of Fisheries, our law program moved to the Institute of Law in 1987 before evolving into the Faculty of Law in 1997. We take pride in offering a comprehensive range of programs, including a five-year integrated master’s degree in law, LL.M. programs specializing in Law of the Sea and Environmental Law, as well as a Ph.D. program. Our faculty comprises approximately 90 dedicated employees, with 20-25 in Ph.D. positions, and a diverse student body of around 950 students enrolled in our master’s program. Research at our faculty is organized into six main groups, covering various areas of law, such as Sami- and indigenous peoples law, Child law, Constitutional law, Administrative law, Law on Property rights, and Crime Control and Security law. Additionally, we are home to the Norwegian Centre for the Law of the Sea (NCLOS), a world-leading research environment in this field. Feel free to explore our page to learn more about our programs and research initiatives.

Professor Magne Frostad and Dr. Alexander Lott had the honor of contributing to the 23rd Congress of the International Society for Military Law and the Law of War (https://www.ismllw.org). Last Thursday, Alexander delivered a presentation on the protection of critical offshore infrastructure in the context of hybrid warfare. On Friday, Magne and Alexander co-presented on the use of force against or defence of merchant ships and the regime of international straits applied in an operational context. We would like to thank the organizers of this wonderful event (Wolff Heintschel von Heinegg, Alfons Vanheusden, and others), co-panelists (Aurel Sari, Kevin Coble, Raul (Pete) Pedrozo), and panel chairs (Marco Benatar and Gabija Damalakaite), as well as the distinguished participants of this congress for the lively debate.

It was a pleasure to represent NCLOS together with my colleagues Richard Barnes and Bastiaan Klerk at the 'BBNJ Workshop: Regime interaction under the BBNJ Agreement', which was hosted by ANCORS in collaboration with Norwegian Centre for the Law of the Sea (NCLOS) , NUS Centre for International Law, Korea Institute of Ocean Science & Technology (KIOST), Ocean Voices Programme, and The Nippon Foundation. This workshop resulted in a deeper understanding of the challenges and opportunities linked to EIA and ABMTs/MPAs as we move forward in operationalizing/implementing the BBNJ Agreement - both in terms of interactions with different IFBs and with national regimes. It was also a great opportunity to reunite with my former colleague and good friend Kristine Elfrida Dalaker, PhD. Faculty of Law | UiT - The Arctic University of Norway 🌊🤓📚
