In an outbreak, every day counts. Removing duplicative efforts and streamlining processes could greatly impact how quickly organizations can respond to emerging outbreaks. CEPI, whose primary focus is vaccine development, and ISARIC - International Severe Acute Respiratory and Emerging Infection Consortium, whose primary focus is therapeutics development, have begun a trial of such a collaboration – complementing each other’s R&D needs to accelerate the development of available defences against viral outbreaks. We want to stop future epidemics by developing new vaccines for a safer world.
Om oss
CEPI is an innovative partnership between public, private, philanthropic, and civil organisations, launched at Davos in 2017, to develop vaccines against future epidemics. Prior to COVID-19, CEPI’s work focused on developing vaccines against the Ebola Virus Disease, Lassa virus, Middle East Respiratory Syndrome coronavirus, Nipah virus, Rift Valley Fever virus and Chikungunya virus. It has over 20 vaccine candidates against these pathogens in development. CEPI has also invested in new platform technologies for rapid vaccine development against unknown pathogens (Disease X). During the COVID-19 pandemic, CEPI initiated multiple programmes to develop vaccines against SARS-CoV-2 and its variants with a focus on speed, scale, and access. These programmes leverage the rapid response platforms developed by CEPI’s partners prior to the emergence of COVID-19, as well as new collaborations. The aim is to advance clinical development of a diverse portfolio of safe and effective COVID-19 candidates and to enable fair allocation of these vaccines worldwide through COVAX. CEPI’s 5-year plan lays out a $3.5 billion roadmap to compress vaccine development timelines to 100 days, develop a broadly protective vaccine against COVID-19 and other Betacoronaviruses, and create a “library” of vaccine candidates for use against known and unknown pathogens. The plan is available at www.endpandemics.cepi.net

"All the same factors that drove the emergence of [the COVID-19 pandemic] are still there, and another disease could emerge at any time.” Ahead of the Global Pandemic Preparedness Summit 2024 taking place in Rio de Janeiro next week, CEPI’s CEO, Dr Richard Hatchett, spoke with O Globo about the urgent need to prepare for future pandemics now. In the article Hatchett reinforces that the next pandemic is an inevitability – with factors like climate change and population growth exacerbating this risk. He calls for a more lateral approach to pandemic preparedness instead of a focus on the “specific disease of the moment”—be it mpox, Covid-19, or Ebola, for example—and then returning to normal once it subsides. Investing in preparedness against viral threats before they become a wide-scale outbreak is key—like the current approach CEPI is taking with the H5N1 outbreak (https://lnkd.in/ezTkpFVc). And it is this approach that underlines the core of the 100 Days Mission: by doing as much of the development process as possible in advance it is possible to potentially produce new vaccines in just 100 days. It's been two years since CEPI and its partners launched its ambitious 100 Days Mission plan. How close is the world to realising it? Kate Kelland’s latest long read investigates ➡️ https://lnkd.in/e9KdZxMg The article highlights that some areas have seen significant progress: 🔉 Global political buy-in for the #100DaysMission has been secured 📚 Scientists have expanded the knowledge base on the ~25 viral families from which the next #DiseaseX is likely to emerge 🌐 The global health security system has strengthened global networks for clinical trials and lab work, alongside enhanced disease surveillance and expanded manufacturing capabilities The article also points out that while we are better prepared to respond rapidly to novel viruses from families like Coronavirus or Poxvirus, we are less well prepared to face others, such as a novel Paramyxovirus. So, while there are grounds for cautious optimism, much work remains to fully realise the 100 Days Mission. The global community cannot afford to let its guard down and shift focus away from this critical mission. That’s why Ministério da Saúde, FIOCRUZ - Fundação Oswaldo Cruz, and CEPI are co-hosting the second Global Pandemic Preparedness Summit 2024 on July 29-30. By bringing together global health experts, the Summit aims to advance the global mission to be ready to respond swiftly and equitably to novel disease threats. Regionalised vaccine manufacturing 🟰 greater efficiency and equity The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted stark disparities in vaccine access, and countries want to have greater health security and control over vaccine manufacturing within their borders. However, consolidating this approach at the regional level is more likely to be more efficient. The RVMC is tasked with accelerating this transformation in vaccine manufacturing, supporting initiatives to enable sustainable regionalized vaccine manufacturing. Learn more about the RVMC on their newly launched website ➡️ https://rvmc.net/ And hear more on this approach next week: Frederik Kristensen, Managing Director of RVMC, will moderate a panel on this very topic at #GPPS2024, discussing strategies to enable sustainable regional manufacturing and how we can make it happen.
