Jay Leonhart (fødd 6. desember 1940) er ein USA-amerikansk kontrabassist, songar og låtskrivar som har arbeidd innan jazz og popmusikk. Han har spelt med Judy Garland, Bucky Pizzarelli, Carly Simon, Frank Sinatra og Sting. Leonhart er kjent for den smarte låtskrivinga si, ofte krydra med tørr humor. Komposisjonane hans har vorte spelte inn av Blossom Dearie, Lee Konitz og Gary Burton. Poesien hans er publisert både i og utanfor musikalske samanhengar.

Karriere

Leonhart voks opp i ein musikalsk familie. Foreldra hans og seks søsken var alle musikkinteresserte. Alle spelte piano. I ein alder av sju år spelte han og den eldre bror hans Bill banjo, gitar, mandolin og bass. Dei spelte countrymusikk og jazz. I dei tidlege tenåra var dei på TV i Baltimore og turnerte landet rundt med banjo. Då Leonhart var fjorten, byrja han å spela kontrabass i Pier Five Dixieland Jazz Band i Baltimore.

Etter studium ved Peabody Institute (1946-1950) gjekk han på Berklee College of Music (1959-1961)[1] og Advanced School of Contemporary Music i Toronto.

I byrjinga av 1960-åra arbeidde han med Mike Longo og Buddy Morrow.[1] Som 21-åring flytta han til New York City for å starta karrieren sin. Han spelte turnékonsertar med storband, småband og songarar. I 1968 møtte og gifta han seg med songaren Donna Zier og busette seg i New York.

Leonhart har jobba med Louie Bellson, Urbie Green, Jim Hall, Lee Konitz, Marian McPartland, Gerry Mulligan, Mike Renzi, Don Sebesky, Chuck Wayne og Phil Woods,[1] Thad Jones, Mel Lewis, Lou Marini og Tony Bennett. Han har jobba som studiomusikar i fleire sjangrar, for musikarar som James Taylor, Ozzy Osbourne og Queen Latifah. Han har òg spelt i duo med trombonisten Wycliffe Gordon.

Mellom 1975 og 1995 vart han kåra til den beste bassisten i platebransjen tre gonger av National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences.

Leonhart har spelt inn mange soloalbum og har framført eit einmannsshow kalla «The Bass Lesson» om sitt liv i musikkbransjen. Han har turnert over heile verda i meir enn førti år.

Son og dotter hans, Michael og Carolyn, har ofte jobba med Steely Dan.
