One Health PACT publication: In recent years the Asian bush mosquito Aedes japonicus has invaded Europe, including the Netherlands. This species is a known vector for a range of arboviruses, possibly including West Nile virus (WNV). As WNV emerged in the Netherlands in 2020, it is important to investigate the vectorial capacity of mosquito species present in the Netherlands to estimate the risk of future outbreaks and further spread of the virus. Therefore, this study evaluates the potential role of Ae. japonicus in WNV transmission and spillover from birds to dead-end hosts in the Netherlands. The research of Charlotte Linthout has been published in Parasites & Vectors. This was a great collaborative effort within the OneHealthPACT, with contributions from Afonso Dimas Martins, Mariken de Wit, Clara DELECROIX, Sandra Abbo, Gorben Pijlman and Sander Koenraadt. In conclusion: combining the field and laboratory derived data, the developed model predicts that Ae. japonicus could act as a spillover vector for WNV and could be responsible for a high initial invasion risk of WNV when present in large numbers. Very excited to share that the study of Pauline de Best and Ayat Abourashed on mosquito-borne virus preventive behaviors in the Netherlands and Spain is now published in BMC Public Health. https://lnkd.in/efYNQpmR Let's dive into the key findings! 🌡 Europe is facing a rise in mosquito-borne viruses cases (MBVs) like West Nile and Dengue. Understanding public perception and behaviour towards MBVs is crucial for effective prevention. This study compares perceptions and behaviour between two European countries. 📊The MosquitoWise survey collected data from 475 participants in Spain and 438 in the Netherlands. Key metrics included intent to use prevention measures, knowledge, and information sources 👍 Interestingly, 92.2% of Spanish and 91.8% of Dutch respondents used at least one prevention measure. However, both Spanish participants and Dutch participants have room for improvement in their intent to use prevention measures. 🧠 Participants in both countries scored well on Mosquito related knowledge. However, Spanish participants had higher MBV knowledge scores than Dutch participants. Participants from both countries showed potential for improving knowledge about MBV and mosquito bite prevention! 🦟 Participants from both countries commonly used repellents and screens. The number of people who remove mosquito breeding sites could be improved for both countries! We found that this can be improved by improving citizens' knowledge and self-efficacy. 📈 We identified determinants with the potential to enhance preventive behaviour, namely: Knowledge, Information, remembering to use prevention measures during mosquito season and worrying about the possibility of getting sick with an MBV. Addressing perceived benefits and cues to action can boost repellent use in both countries. 🌍 Conclusion: Despite some differences, the Netherlands and Spain share similar determinants for adopting prevention measures. Tailored public health campaigns focusing on these determinants can improve mosquito-borne virus prevention across Europe. #HealthPromotion 📢 🎉 Special thanks to all contributors and participants of this study. Together, we can make strides in public health interventions and prevent the spread of MBVs! 🦟 Aura Timen, Marion Koopmans, R. S., John Palmer, Frederic Bartumeus, Eric C.M. Van Gorp, Laura D.

🌎 One Health PACT June retreat 🦟 Today we had an inspiring and highly interactive gathering of our PhD students and Principal Investigators at Universiteit Utrecht for a day dedicated to synthesizing knowledge from our past four years of One Health scientific research. Our focus today was on integrating insights from various areas of expertise, exploring the drivers of emergence, ecosystem- focused monitoring, and the infection, impact and response in different hosts. The afternoon is (still!) particularly stimulating with a scenario workshop by @Arjan Stroo from CMV at the Nederlandse Voedsel- en Warenautoriteit (NVWA) on potential outbreaks and developing the best response strategies! The second scenario workshop is given by Reina Sikkema from Erasmus MC about the Fundamental Change in Virus Presence. 💡Key question: from your perspective, what is the crucial question that requires an immediate answer during a new outbreak? #OneHealthPACT #Research #PublicHealth #EcosystemHealth #KnowledgeSynthesis #OutbreakResponse #OneHealth Universiteit Leiden Radboudumc Wageningen University & Research Universiteit Utrecht NWO (Nederlandse Organisatie voor Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek) Avans Hogeschool Erasmus MC Nederlands Instituut voor Ecologie (NIOO-KNAW) KNMI - Koninklijk Nederlands Meteorologisch Instituut Sanquin Nederlandse Voedsel- en Warenautoriteit (NVWA) Deltares UMC Utrecht OneHealthPACT Netherlands Centre for One Health (NCOH) Rijksinstituut voor Volksgezondheid en Milieu Rode Kruis Nederland Stichting Technasium Sovon Vogelonderzoek Nederland GGD Rotterdam-Rijnmond @CSIC CEAB

One Health PACT publication: Mosquito-borne diseases are on the rise. While climatic factors have been linked to disease occurrences, they do not explain the non-random spatial distribution in disease outbreaks. Landscape-related factors, such as vegetation structure, likely play a crucial but hitherto unquantified role. Louie Krol explored how three critically important factors, associated with mosquito-borne disease outbreaks (#microclimate, #mosquito abundance and bird communities) vary at the landscape scale. They explored how three critically important factors that are associated with mosquito-borne disease outbreaks: microclimate, mosquito abundance and bird communities, vary at the landscape scale. They compared the co-occurrence of these three factors in two contrasting habitat types (forest versus grassland) across five rural locations in the central part of the Netherlands between June and September 2021. New study out! 🚨 https://lnkd.in/ecF7M-sP West Nile Virus (WNV) is a growing public health concern in Europe. To mitigate its effects, mechanistic models can help understand its dynamics and predict future outbreaks. In this study, we systematically reviewed mechanistic models of WNV and delved into their aims, assumptions, and parametrization. We found that applied WNV models aiming at predicting are including more detailed features than the theoretical ones. Additionally, although the number of included features is increasing, gaps in knowledge still exist. We identified challenges in parameterising such complex models using lab and field studies. Among others, experimental conditions don't always reflect conditions in the modelled system and model parameters cannot always be estimated in the field or in a lab. We present potential solutions to these challenges. We also gathered parameter values used in the reviewed models, which can be of help for future WNV modellers! This study highlights the potential to improve the quality of WNV models and their applicability for policy by establishing closer collaboration between mathematical modelling and empirical work. And of course it was a collaborative effort, so thanks to everybody involved in the project Mariken de Wit, Afonso Dimas Martins, Quirine ten Bosch, Hans Heesterbeek, OneHealthPACT
