Must-read column from MVO Nederland Director Wouter Scheepens, from January but still very relevant: Why are we listening to the losers of the future?

Sustainability and making money are incompatible. At least, that image arises if you can believe the appeal of many a large company in the media. Legislation to protect nature and society are portrayed in a negative way. Sustainability apparently makes the Netherlands a less attractive country. What you also hear a lot: there are countries that don't do as much as we do, so why should we? According to these companies, a leakage effect is imminent. Or: it is not up to us to change, consumers have to adjust their behaviour.
These are largely myths, sowing confusion in order to avoid having to make real sustainability efforts. To avoid having to change. But sustainability is actually good for our economy. What's more: the companies that try to slow things down by doing this ultimately also end up working against themselves. After all, the short-term hassle never outweighs the long-term benefits: security of existence, innovative strength and a competitive advantage.
*Sustainability is nothing special*
Sustainability is nothing special, it is just a logical next step for our economy. The companies that are already taking steps now are giving themselves a head start. They are the winners of the future.
MVO Netherlands is the largest sustainable business network in the Netherlands. Its approximately two thousand companies The approximately two thousand companies in our network show that sustainable entrepreneurship with a revenue model is possible. Companies such as Renewi, Zeeman, Triodos Bank, Auping, Crisp and Dopper show that there are business models that are good for nature, society and the company itself; they are not distracted by the issues of the day or by resisting talk. They simply stay in the Netherlands, they do business with an eye for nature and society.
Don't let it scare you
Entrepreneurs, civil servants and politicians should not be frightened. We do not understand why Europe is suddenly voting against the Nature Restoration Act and the CSDDD is being watered down. Smart entrepreneurs embrace the future and don't get stuck in the past. They see that sustainable entrepreneurship is the standard. They realise: sustainability is actually about enterprise continuity. About infinite entrepreneurship. About gaining competitive advantage.
