I have always, in parallel with following the contemporary developments in ferries, been interested in what they are built upon; The advances of the past, not least by reading old issues of The Motor Ship. Here is a retrospect on the golden age of car ferries, which was also a golden time for Danish shipbuilding, as the new ferries rapidly ran out of car capacity.

Managing Risks in Innovative Superyacht New Builds Where is the innovation today? Biomechanics propulsion systems Alternative fuels Materials Sailing yacht rigging spars Energy use and management Sail technology Who is driving change? Owner inspiration, from IMO decarbonisation and alternative fuels, Saftey, and Green movement. A need for deep pockets, a desire for collaborative flexible shipyard was discussed and need to bring in Class and flag as a collaborative effort and a good contract was discussed by Derek Munro Divergent Yachting. And a confident knowledgeable team is key to a successful build. The need to spend more time up front risk identification on the project planning is key and not to rush into a project. Julian Smith reiterated the need to get preapproval with Flag and class well in advance and obtain their experience. Peter Wilson pushed for safety first culture in the process and need for innovation since motor yacht design has the potential to improve significantly. And success is a step by step process with multiple little gains bringing a big change in efficiency and design. The panel hosted by Panos Pourgourides recognised we need to challenge the cut and paste designs and develop positive change and encourage shipyards to take risks. Derek Munro raised an important point in that innovation and these large projects creates jobs onshore and tax paying employment which turns the economy. Resale values of the most innovative yachts were discussed with the conclusion that owners don’t do these projects for resale value but because they are excited to prove the technology. #Safteyfirst #NewBuilds #Innovation #YachtingIndustry #OwnerRepresentatives #CrewTraining #IndustryInsights #Superyachts #Newbuild #Yachtmanagement #Shipyards #Technology #Risktakers #innovation #Climatechange #technologychange #Eclipse #Maltesefalcon #Blackpearl #NDAs #Contracts #Confidentiality #IP #Intellectualproperty #Knowledgeshare #SYILondon #Reputationrisk #Employees #Economy #Taxes

📢 A new revision of the gold standard Red Ensign Group Yacht Code was published on the 1st of January 2024. The code prescribes standards of safety and pollution prevention which are appropriate to the size and type of yacht, this code is designed to cater exclusively to the yachting sector. 🖊 Substantive changes have been made to reflect the relevant regulatory amendments published in recent years by the International Maritime Organization, and to accommodate current trends and #innovation in #design, taking into account technological changes in the industry. It includes guidance on – for example – the storage and installation of #battery systems. ✅ This revision was developed in close consultation with the Red Ensign Group Yacht Code Industry Working group which consist of a wide-ranging number of stakeholders including shipyards, vessel designers’, management companies and regulatory authorities. ℹ Although the Code is being published today, it will not come into force until July 2024 to give the industry time both to become familiar with it and comply. A Red Ensign Group spokesperson said: “The REG Yacht Code is the international standard for construction and operation of these vessels. We will never compromise on crew welfare and safety and maintain the highest maritime safety standards. However, we do recognise that it’s important to support innovation and technological development in a changing industry.” Please see full Red Ensign Group Yacht Code revision publication here: https://lnkd.in/eRxNfnKz Department for Transport (DfT), United Kingdom
