#FAQ In this series, employees of the Project Office Einstein Telescope - EMR answer frequently asked questions. Today's question is: 𝗖𝗮𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗘𝗶𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗶𝗻 𝗧𝗲𝗹𝗲𝘀𝗰𝗼𝗽𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗵𝗾𝘂𝗮𝗸𝗲𝘀? Wim Walk, technical manager: 'This question is often asked. The answer is clear: no. The Einstein Telescope requires a stable and noise-free ground. This location would never have been considered if the region had a high risk of earthquakes and thus earthquake damage. The construction and subsequent use of the telescope at about 250 meters depth do not increase the risk of earthquakes. Think of it as drilling a hole from one side of a hard stone to the other. That hole is very small compared to the entire stone, and it does not make the stone weaker or less stable. The same applies to the construction of the Einstein Telescope in relation to the entire ground. Another comparison is with a car tunnel through a high mountain, such as the Gotthard Tunnel in Switzerland: the tunnel does not make the mountain unstable. Comparing it to earthquakes in Groningen caused by gas extraction is not applicable here. In Groningen, gas is located under pressure in a porous layer deep below the surface. This layer owes its stability to the presence of that gas. If you extract the gas, the porous layer becomes less stable, which can lead to subsidence and earthquakes. This is not the case with the Einstein Telescope. We do know that small tremors occasionally occur in this area, as is the case in many places around the world. We take this into account when establishing the construction requirements for the Einstein Telescope. The telescope must be able to withstand such a tremor. The only consequence would be that the measurement taken at that moment would not be usable.' DEMCON kryoz, Cooll and the University of Twente are developing a vibration-free cooling technique for the Einstein Telescope with a grant from the Dutch National Growth Fund. ❄️ This should help get the mirrors of the future detector for gravitational waves as quiet as possible, says founder of Demcon Kryoz Pieter-Paul Lerou.

Hans Plets, director: 'We, as Euregio Meuse-Rhine, are not the only ones who want to build the Einstein Telescope. Sardinia in Italy has also applied, and they are conducting a feasibility study as well. Additionally, it is cautiously anticipated that Saxony in Germany might also come forward as a third candidate to host the Einstein Telescope. The final decision will be made at the governmental level by the European countries supporting the Einstein Telescope project. The committee responsible for site selection and the procedures involved are still under development. It is clear that the committee will consist of representatives from the countries that have shown support for the project. These countries currently include the Netherlands, Belgium, Italy, Austria, France, Poland, Spain, and the United Kingdom. Germany currently holds an observer status.' A new milestone! ✨ Researchers from the Max Planck Institute for Gravitational Physics (Albert Einstein Institute; AEI) and Leibniz Universität Hannover have set up, tested, and commissioned a laser source in a laboratory at the #ETpathfinder site in Maastricht. ETpathfinder is a research and development facility for the #EinsteinTelescope, the future third-generation European gravitational-wave observatory. Later this year, in addition to further characterization, the first preliminary tests are planned to integrate the laser system into ETpathfinder. Full integration and regular experiments with the new laser source in ETpathfinder are scheduled to begin next year. Read the press release: 🇬🇧 https://lnkd.in/eigAqkYS 🇩🇪 https://lnkd.in/egEtGvGU
