M. Sc (Hort.) in Genetics and Plant Breeding | College of Horticulture, Bengaluru | University of Horticultural Sciences, Bagalkot, Karnataka
The notion that entering an agriculture or horticulture college guarantees a secure government job is perhaps one of the most pervasive myths of the 21st century. However, the reality for graduates in these fields is starkly different. Upon completing their degrees, agriculture students often find themselves grappling with numerous challenges, particularly those hailing from middle-class or farming backgrounds. Government job opportunities in the agricultural sector are scarce, with recruitment drives occurring only once every four to five years, and the number of available positions typically limited to a mere 250 to 350. This scarcity leaves many graduates feeling disheartened, prompting some to redirect their aspirations towards competitive exams like UPSC, KPSC, banking, or police services. Others embark on a difficult journey into the private sector, where job prospects often entail marketing roles with modest initial salaries ranging from 15,000 to 20,000 rupees. Despite securing employment in the private sector, many still encounter significant challenges and hurdles along the way. Some opt to pursue higher education, such as obtaining a Master's or Ph.D. degree, in hopes of enhancing their employability. However, even with advanced degrees, the job search can be arduous, leaving some graduates disillusioned and struggling to secure suitable positions. A select few venture into entrepreneurship, although this path is fraught with its own set of challenges, often proving to be the most daunting option of all. Despite the obstacles they face, these individuals demonstrate resilience and determination as they navigate through the complexities of the job market. In essence, the journey of an agriculture or horticulture student is characterized by perseverance in the face of adversity. While the road may be fraught with obstacles, it is imperative to press forward with unwavering determination, embracing the struggles as part of the broader journey towards personal and professional growth.

From researching my bachelor's thesis, I found out that the term ‘local product’ is still too vague a notion. Everyone fills in the meaning of this somewhat for themselves and this also makes it difficult to promote it. While researching the importance of this, I came across an interesting article that takes another look at this concept. It is specifically about what Flevoland (the Netherlands) would look like in 2025 and what the focus should be. Are you interested in this too? IK SPREEK FENOTYPEREN – JIJ OOK? 🌱 Gedurende mijn studie Plantenwetenschappen en stage bij Hiphen heb ik een aanzienlijke vooruitgang meegemaakt van technologieën in plant fenotypering. ️ ✏️Are our economic curriculums out of date? Some exciting news from a couple of weeks ago! 📚 The concept of True Pricing is set to be integrated into the Dutch high school business economics curriculum. This is a remarkable stride forward for everyone working on true pricing over the years! 💡 Imagine a future where all people, entrepreneurs, employees, and policymakers are equipped with the tools to foster a more humane and environmentally conscious approach to entrepreneurship. True Pricing paves the way for this paradigm shift. 🌐While the concept is yet to be formally incorporated, its potential impact is immeasurable. We envision True Pricing spilling over to practical and vocational training, as well as other disciplines, such as economics, biology, mathematics, geography. This is how we collectively cultivate a reservoir of knowledge that transcends disciplines, fostering our understanding that an economy without true prices is no longer sustainable💙🌍 #TruePrice #EducationInnovation #Sustainability
BACKGROUND The COVID-19 food security and economic diversity in Curacao, Aruba, and Sint Maarten research project is a collaborative research project between the Universities of Curacao, Aruba, and Sint Maarten, funded by the Netherlands Organization for Health Research and Development (ZonMw). The research project recognizes that the socio-economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic upon the island states of Curaçao, Aruba, and Sint Maarten has exacerbated the need for both economic diversification and the bolstering of food security. The research project, therefore, seeks to explore how the pandemic has affected local food systems and how agriculture can contribute to diversification policy strategies that will help make the islands' pandemic resilient. Central to this project is the participation of local stakeholders and community members in the design of data collection and interpretation. The Research Assistant (RA) is responsible for assisting the researchers based in Aruba in a variety of non-administrative tasks which may include holding interviews, conducting desk research, analyzing and interpreting data for the research, documenting results, etc in support of the above-mentioned research activities. 2. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES The ZonMw task lead determines RA research goals to assist in the preparation for and achievement of the ZonMw research goals which may include the following and/or other duties specific to the research objectives: • Research and collect data through complex techniques and procedures, library research, structured interviews, or other project-specific methodology. • Interpret, synthesize, and analyze survey data. • Schedule, organize, and report on the status of research activities. • Write and edit materials for publication and presentation. • Meet with ZonMw task lead on a regular basis to maintain ongoing communication regarding the quality of the assistant’s performance. • Perform other related duties as required. The RA will work online and will be expected to have the necessary equipment (laptop/PC, internet connection, standard licensed software package, etc) to work remotely. 3. TIMETABLE AND PAYMENT ARRANGMENTS The assignment will commence September 1st of 2023, based on the number of hours worked and invoiced, not exceeding 560 hours, and subject to approval by the task leader. Payments to the student will be completed by the University of Aruba at a remuneration of Afl. 12.00 per hour (gross, UA deducts and contributes to AZV/AOV/AWW). Today is #worldsoilday 2023. World Soil Day 2023 (WSD) and its campaign aim to raise awareness of the importance and relationship between soil and water in achieving sustainable and resilient agri-food systems. WSD is a unique global platform that not only celebrates soils but also empowers and engages citizens around the world to improve soil health. Did you know.. 95% of our food comes from soils? One cubic meter of healthy soil can retain over 250 litres of water? Improper soil and water management practices affect soil erosion, soil biodiversity, soil fertility, and water quality and quantity? Healthy soil plays a crucial role as a natural filter, purifying and storing water as it infiltrates into the ground? KEITS are proud to support the horticulture sector in providing expert training and apprenticeships within this industry. If you are an employer wanting to help train the next generation whilst accessing employer incentives then contact us on: 0208 327 3800 [email protected]
