#OW #BalticSea #collaboration Van Oord, Euroports and Smulders combine competence to build the leading Baltic Sea offshore wind energy center in the Port of Liepaja. Today, 25 April 2024, at the largest wind energy conference in the Baltics “WindWorks”, leading Dutch offshore wind farm and port construction company Van Oord announced an agreement with the international port operator Euroports and the steel structure manufacturer Smulders to create a consortium for joint development of an offshore wind and heavy lift terminal in the Port of Liepaja. The new terminal in the Port of Liepaja will address the lack of the port infrastructure capacity needed for the construction of windfarms in the Baltic Sea. Moreover, the new terminal will be used for handling other large size commodities and for industrial manufacturing purposes. A 55-hectare area will be created through land reclamation. Multifunctional cargo handling infrastructures will be constructed that will provide an opportunity for new production and/or assembly complexes. Euroports is one of the largest port infrastructure companies in Europe with 50 terminals globally and logistic platforms all over the world, strategically located on key trade routes in Europe and China. Smulders is a multidisciplinary international construction company with more than 1700 employees spread across the sites in Belgium, the Netherlands, Poland, and the United Kingdom, focusing on civil and industrial projects involving steel, and offshore wind energy. Van Oord Project Manager Mark Bot: “Signing of this MoU with our partners is a huge step in the development of the new offshore wind and heavy lift terminal in Liepaja. Not only does it confirm the sincere interest of important industry partners, but it also brings the necessary expertise and commitment that are needed to develop a project of this magnitude in Liepaja”. Liepaja SEZ CEO Uldis Hmieļevskis expressed his satisfaction that the leading companies in the offshore wind industry have united and selected Liepaja as the most suitable place for the establishment of an offshore wind support base in the Baltic Region. "Van Oord, Euroports and Smulders are industry professionals who, by combining and sharing their competence in the sphere of wind energy, will contribute to the transformation of the energy industry in the Baltic Region and ensure good changes for the next generations". The signed consortium agreement between Van Oord, Euroports and Smulders is the next step in achieving excellence in all aspects of the project development: Combining and leveraging knowledge from design to construction, commissioning, and maintenance. Creation of full-fledged solutions in the production of steel parts, logistics efficiency in the transportation of wind farm components. Establishment of optimized supply chains, minimizing possible risks, which will create positive financial circulation.

What is involved in this job? What are the #challenges? 🌊 Ruud: "My scope is the entire #fleet of Anthony Veder. The #VesselManager controls 2 to 3 ships in general. They focus on the day-to-day business of the ship and prepare for the big maintenance job and #drydocking. 📋 Together with our #AssetManagers, we have a multi-disciplinary team of Vessel Managers, #CrewingManagers, #Purchasers, #MarineAssurance and #BusinessControl to look from now to 5 quarters ahead on the complete asset and make a good plan for that. And you could say I grease that system and connect the loose ends. ⛴️ What's the best way to see the Port of Rotterdam? Meet Joost Eenhuizen, Port of Rotterdam's business manager for breakbulk & offshore who has worked at the port for 21 years. His enthusiasm and ever-present smile reflect his love for the job. We asked him three big questions as he and his team are preparing for Breakbulk Europe 2024 – our third time in Rotterdam, hosted by the port. Q: WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO EXPERIENCE THE PORT OF ROTTERDAM? The best way to visit the port is definitely by boat. All breakbulk terminals have a main focus on quayside operations and this can best be seen and experienced from the waterside. Visitors to Rotterdam will see both the city terminals close to the city center of Rotterdam as well as for the large scale terminals such as Maasvlakte. Different tours are organized throughout the year and they are never the same as the port is constantly busy with dozens of vessels. We've arranged a special boat tour on Wednesday, 22 May, that leaves the dock at 16:30 and returns at 20:00. I recommend you join to get a front-row seat. *There is a max capacity for this event. Besides truly optimal nautical access and process as seen from a vessel perspective, I couldn’t be more proud of the variety, flexibility, and in-depth experiences all Rotterdam companies are able to provide. Whether that's in steel, non-ferrous, forest products, or Heavy Lift & Project Cargo, over 20 terminals and an even greater number of supportive/ service companies have been able to constantly adapt to changing market dynamics and are constantly investing in efficiency improvement and measurements to improve sustainable operations. Besides being a logistic hub, the port of Rotterdam is itself a major industrial area and serves other major industrial areas which are all in transition to become more circular. The breakbulk industry is a major contributor to these developments and as proved in the past, the industry will be geared to facilitate the European industry for decades to come. Q: TELL US THREE THINGS ABOUT THE PORT THAT PEOPLE DON'T KNOW ABOUT! A major port basin for breakbulk industry is the Waalhaven. It is the largest hand-dug port basin in Europe! One of the largest breakbulk terminals in Rotterdam used to be a full-sized container terminal, a rare re-development which normally is seen in the opposite direction. The origin of the Port of Rotterdam Authority partly lies in bankruptcy of a businessman over a century ago. Today is the OCEANOVATION summit in the Netherlands. How can we improve our impact on the oceans and planet in the maritime and ports sector? Some of the main issues for our oceans are: -Acidification, due to too much CO2 -Warming, leading to for example coral bleaching -Sea level rise, threatening large communities close to the sea This is why it is crucial that this community comes together to share best practices, form alliances and accelerate innovate. The session on sustainability in the ports and maritime sector was chaired by Ann Lee Carpenter and joined by Joris Kil, Oliver Risse and myself. We discussed: -The speed of innovation in our sector: how can we help startups and corporates to speed up implementation? -The need for focus on scaleups: especially in this phase we need more projects, finances and corporate involvement! -The role of hydrogen, digital and electrifcation is ports: the sector is clearly moving, but learning how to pilot fast and effectively is still a challenge. Eleven tugs have been transported on one vessel from Asia to Europe in a rare major logistical operation that was all Dutch in achievement. Dutch firm BigLift Shipping B.V. deployed its 156m heavy-lift vessel Happy Star to transport the 11 Damen tugs, with two heavy-lift mast cranes weighing 1,100 tonnes each on board. On April 4, Happy Star set sail from Damen’s shipyard in Halong Bay in Vietnam for Europe., and arrived in Vigo, Spain just 38 days later. One vessel was unloaded there before she continued to Rotterdam to unload the remaining 10 on May 19. Happy Star can lift up to 2,200 mt in tandem lift, with a lifting height of nearly 47m above the main deck. With a weather deck extending over the full width of the vessel, her load space can be used to the utmost and she can sail with open weather deck hatches on a draught of up to 8m. The vessel has Finnish/Swedish 1A Ice Class notation. “These mass deliveries do not take place often as it is rare that so many vessels are ready to be dispatched at the same time,” said Damen Services Heavylift coordinator Rimmert Berlijn. “The last such event occurred in 2015 when Happy Star transported 22 vessels of various types on the same route." “However, this brings advantages versus delivering vessels on their own hulls. These include having the vessels and their equipment arriving in pristine condition. The marine environment also benefits from having fewer emissions with just one ship, albeit a larger one, doing all the work.
