Alternative milks are not so alternative anymore. In the Netherlands, ~15% of all milk sold is plant-based.   For dairy companies, the milk category is 'small beans' as it makes up only ~6% of total profits. Companies should consider thoughtfully what will happen when strong alternatives to yoghurt, cheese or infant nutrition emerge.   Over the next weeks I will dive into the future of dairy. Are companies seeking a candidate that doesn't exist? At the World Hydrogen Summit in Rotterdam yesterday the panel discussion on "Careers Combatting Climate Change: Challenges and Opportunities in the Hydrogen Sector" sparked some compelling insights and highlighted the challenges and opportunities in building human capabilities for the Hydrogen Economy. While it is true that the hydrogen sector is rapidly evolving, demanding a mindset of continuous learning and adaptability, there are ways of bridging the disparity between existing skill sets and the evolving needs of the hydrogen market. Transitioning from conventional energy requires strategic navigation, but achievements in conventional energy aren't obsolete and they are instead often seen as transferable assets. Recognising and articulating the transferable nature of these achievements can redefine one's career narrative in the clean energy realm. 🎓 GRADUATED 🎓 Last month, I successfully defended my thesis titled “Demand Shocks versus Supply Stability: The Dutch Healthcare Dilemma”, receiving a final grade of 8.5 out of 10! My research was conducted with assistance from Rudy Douven (Thank you, Rudy!) from the CPB Netherlands Bureau for Economic Policy Analysis and the Erasmus School of Health Policy & Management (ESHPM). The topic is incredibly relevant, particularly given the Dutch government's recent aspiration to substantially change the Dutch healthcare cost-sharing system through a decrease of the mandatory deductible. The Dutch healthcare sector currently experiences serious pressure, and such a change is expected to widen the gap between the demand and supply of healthcare. In my thesis, I examine the situation in the Netherlands and find that while the goal of increasing accessibility through lower deductibles is admirable, it may lead to unintended consequences that could undermine the overall efficacy and sustainability of the healthcare system. The benefits of increased accessibility should be weighed against the risks of escalated costs and strained healthcare resources.
