Info

From the very beginning of my scientific career I have been working on the understanding of tumor biology to impact cancer treatment. In the AMC, I built a translational research group for upper GI cancers and set-up a biobank for esophagogastric and pancreatic cancer, including plasma and serum samples, tumor tissue for multi-omics analyses and patient derived xenografts and organoids. The strong interaction between more fundamental and clinical researchers in my group has resulted in the quick implementation of potential biomarkers in clinical trials that I initiated.

The activities of my group has established the AMC as a national reference center for the systemic treatment of upper GI cancers with international recognition. The prospective cohort studies on pancreatic cancer (www.pacap.nl) and esophagogastric cancer (www.pocop.nl) that I initiated together with others, have built a strong national network to carry out clinical studies, incorporating novel trial designs. This, together with a well-functioning trial unit in the Department of Medical Oncology which I head, makes our center an attractive partner for pharmaceutical industry. The transition of cancer care and research from AMC to VUMC will further boost our activities in this field.

Next to tumor biology, I have also been intrigued by the question what quality of life means, especially in the context of cancer and chronic disease. The complexity of this concept requires a transdisciplinary approach. My PhDs in Medical Oncology and Religious Studies have allowed me to develop competencies to set-up a research team from different backgrounds, including medicine, artificial intelligence, international health, religious studies, humanities, cultural sociology, and psychology. The publications resulting from my group have been well received by internationally highly esteemed journals.

Over the past years, I closely collaborated with national and international patient organizations. I have given several interviews for radio, television and written (lay) press about my work. To further bridge the gap between science and society, I participated in the implementation of the Dutch Scientific Agenda and I am spearhead of the Roadmap Personalized Medicine.

Finally, my large experience in supervision and teaching, including chairing the ESMO Upper GI Faculty, has allowed me to contribute to the generation of young researchers and health care professionals that are aware of the power of multidisciplinary research.
