YGT in ESA Model-Based Management System | Project lead of the ESA Young Professional Satellite

It's been 10 days since we launched YPSat on the Ariane 6's maiden flight! 🚀🛰️ The YPSat mission was an amazing succes, capturing breathtaking events during launch, and capturing scientific data on Earth's magnetic field, thanks to our collaboration with the OSCAR (Optical Sensors based on CARbon materials) team from Hasselt University. The success of this mission reflects the dedication and passion of Young Professionals in the Space industry, taking initiative to launch their own projects and missions! Reflecting on the past year, here are some key takeaways from leading the YPSat project through its final AIT stages and launch: 🛰 Responsible engineers: At SpaceX, engineers are known as RE's - responsible engineers who blend domain expertise with a systems engineering mindset. ➡ The success of a project hinges on having RE's who extend their focus beyond individual subsystems to ensure seamless integration across teams. 🛰 Experience vs. Testing: While experience is invaluable, nothing beats exhaustive testing! ➡ Thorough testing provides confidence and validation, allowing even those with limited experience to ensure system performance. 🛰 Seek help from others: Embracing feedback and seeking help from others is a crucial part of the learning process. Reviews and critiques from a diverse group of experts often reveal insights and perspectives that may have been overlooked, leading to smarter decisions and better outcomes. ❗ Keep in mind, the purpose of reviews are for the reviewee, not to entertain the crowd of reviewers. ❗ The best answer to a critical comment is “Thank you!” 💡 Follow YPSAT and stay tuned for more post-launch content and analysis! Here's to many more missions, inspiring future generations! 🌟👩🚀

⭐It finally happened!⭐ Last week the next iteration of our quantum diamond magnetometer, OSCAR-QUBE launched into space as part of the ESA YPSAT mission aboard the maiden flight of Ariane 6 - Europe’s biggest rocket yet! 🚀 Our new and improved device is more sensitive, smaller, and lighter than its predecessor. The quantum sensor developed by our interdisciplinary student team was tested as the scientific payload for ESA’s YPSAT. While working closely together with the ESA YP’s over the last two years, we grew a lot as a team allowing more UHasselt students to step into space and quantum research. 🧑🎓 To celebrate this milestone, we organized a watch party at Hasselt University, featuring inspiring talks in line with the OSCAR journey by our rector Bernard Vanheusden, imo-imomec director Marlies Van Bael, and representatives from POM Limburg Maxime Corvilain and YPSAT Melek Tapmaz. 🎤 Two team members had the opportunity to watch the launch from two different ESA sites, providing us with live updates and interviews. Joren Verdyck at the European Space Research and Technology Centre (ESTEC) in the Netherlands, and Simon Wilmots at the European Space Operations Centre (ESOC) in Germany. 🔭📡 The highlight of the evening was the surreal moment of standing in front of the big screen, surrounded by the team, and watching the roaring rocket ascend with the device we worked hard on together. This culmination of two years of teamwork and dedication resulted in a device that survived the launch and measured scientific data along the Ariane 6 trajectory for us to analyze. 🛰️📉 This achievement was celebrated afterwards at the networking reception where we managed to bring together each OSCAR generation and some of the people who have supported us throughout this ongoing journey, full of challenges and supraises! A special thanks to Julien Krompholtz, Tuur Strobbe and the entire YPSAT team for this incredible ride! It was amazing to witness what young professionals can achieve when working together towards a common goal, and thank you for sharing this unique opportunity with our student team and inspiring the next generations to dream of space! 🌌 The entire team is excited to push this success to new heights with the upcoming OSCAR-PINQ, which will fly onboard the ESA Space Rider. Stay tuned and let’s see what the future of space magnetometry holds! 💫 #OSCARQUBE #OSCARPINQ #YPSAT #IMOMEC #UHASSELT #QUANTUM #ARIANE6 #MAGNETOMETRY #ESA #POMLIMBURG #ESTEC #ESOC

#MondayQuotivation💡 🤔 How are you and the YPSAT team feeling after seeing your satellite launch on the Ariane 6 and now in space?❓ 🗨 "I think it's hard to summarize how the team is feeling. From the weeks before launch until now, it has been an emotional rollercoaster with a mix of emotions. Seeing the #Ariane6 launching only meant that for many of us, the critical part of the mission had just begun, and the atmosphere in the Mission Control Room at #ESOC was a mix of joy and tension, as we knew it was in space, but we did not know all the details and even if our pictures and videos made it back to Earth. Having worked on the YPSat Project for close to two years myself, seeing our #satellite reaching orbit aboard the Ariane 6, being in the Mission Control Room at ESOC as we had contact with our ground stations… It was like a scene out of a Science Fiction movie. The moment when we saw the videos and pictures from space, we all screamed of joy, we got tears in our eyes, and we could hardly believe it was true. The YPSat mission has been a life-changing event for all of us, and we could not have been prouder of our little satellite." 💬 – Lasse Fredagsvik, YPSat Project Communications Lead and Main Coordinator of Young ESA #ESA #SpaceExploration #Innovation #Inspiration #QuoteOfTheDay #MotivationalMonday #SuccessQuotes

📡 Experimental payload sends Ariane 6 footage back to Earth From the Main Control Room, located at #ESOC, the YPSAT team kept its eyes on the mission as it flew on #Ariane6 inaugural flight. Developed from A to Z by ESA Young Professionals, the mission aimed to monitor and record every stage of the flight, such as the fairing separation. With the collaboration of 11 ground stations across Europe and South America, the YPSat telecommunications team successfully recovered all the data necessary to achieve the mission's objectives. To accomplish this, YPSat team members in the Main Control Room at ESOC performed frequent re-calculations to fit two-line element sets to the trajectory of Ariane 6. This data was subsequently shared with the collaborating ground stations to adjust their pointing strategy and track YPSat during its flight onboard Ariane 6. Ground stations were requested to record raw data that was then decoded and used to reconstruct images and videos. Throughout its two years of development, the project received advice from a wide range of ESA experts, including from ESA's Directorate of Operations which helped regarding the #GroundStation coverage needed to gather data from YPSat. Interested in learning how the data is recovered on the ground 👉 https://lnkd.in/gZ-A5EcG
