For the period up to 21 July 2024, worldwide available cargo capacity was up 2% compared to the same period in 2023. The share of freighters has been relatively stable, dropping only 1 percentage point to 52% this year. For Asia Pacific we see a very different picture: air cargo capacity increased 11% year-on-year. Moreover, the share of air cargo capacity on freighter flights is 11 percentage points higher than the worldwide average, but it did come down from 67% in 2023 to 63% this year.

Asia Pacific rates soar despite drop in China-USA demand Air cargo spot rates from Asia Pacific continue to soar, despite a drop in demand from China to the USA in the last two full weeks, according to the latest weekly figures and analysis from WorldACD Market Data. Average global air cargo rates rose by a further 2% in the third full week of July to US$2.56 a kilo, thanks to increases from Asia Pacific and Middle East & South Asia (MESA) origins, despite total worldwide tonnages declining for the third consecutive week. That average worldwide of $2.56 a kilo is 14% above the equivalent week last year and remains significantly higher than the equivalent period prior to Covid ( 47% compared to July 2019). Rates stay firm despite slight July demand lull Worldwide air cargo rates and demand softened slightly from most regions in the second week of July, although tonnages and average global prices remain significantly higher than this time last year, thanks to continuing elevated demand and high rates from Asia and the Middle East. According to the latest weekly figures and analysis from WorldACD Market Data, there was a -1% drop in worldwide tonnages in week 28 (8 to 14 July), mainly due to falls from Europe (-5%), Asia Pacific (-2%) and Africa (-5%). But a post-Independence Day rebound from North America ( 6%) origins and from Central & South America (CSA) ( 4%) helped keep total worldwide tonnages relatively firm during what is normally a quiet month. Demand dips due to US Independence Day, rates stay high ex-Asia Global air cargo demand dropped by around -5% in the first week of July, mainly due to the impact of US Independence Day holidays, but average worldwide rates remain high thanks to continuing rises from Asia Pacific origins. According to the latest weekly figures and analysis from WorldACD Market Data, the -5% drop in worldwide tonnages in week 27 (1 to 7 July) included a fall of -13% from North America origins, with the ‘Fourth of July’ celebrations also contributing to a -8% drop from Central & South America (CSA), and declines of -4% from Europe and -3% from Asia Pacific. Worldwide tonnages were up, year on year (YoY), by 11% in week 27, roughly in line with the figure for June and for the second quarter of 2024 as a whole, according to the more than 450,000 weekly transactions covered by WorldACD’s data. For weeks 26 and 27 combined, tonnages were up by 13%, YoY. Tonnages up 12% in the first half of 2024 Global air cargo tonnages were up by 12% in the first half of 2024 compared with the equivalent period last year, according to preliminary figures and analysis from WorldACD Market Data, with 11% year-on-year (YoY) growth in the second quarter (Q2) following on from the 12% recorded in Q1. The preliminary figure for June of 9%, YoY, was slightly below the average YoY full-month tonnage growth figure so far this year, with strong YoY growth continuing from Asia Pacific origins but with demand from Middle East & South Asia (MESA) origins dropping back somewhat from the highly elevated tonnage growth levels experienced in the first quarter. Tonnages from MESA origins in Q2 were still significantly higher ( 13%) than the equivalent period last year, but that growth figure was well below the 27% growth recorded in Q1, from a region particularly affected by the disruptions to container shipping caused by the attacks on vessels in the Red Sea. Global tonnages dip due to Eid al-Adha festival Worldwide average air cargo rates have continued to rise, despite a drop in tonnages to and from countries with predominantly Muslim populations linked to the Eid al-Adha annual festivals and holidays – which this year took place between 16 and 20 June. According to the latest weekly figures and analysis from WorldACD Market Data, total worldwide tonnages flown in the last full week (week 25, 17-23 June) dropped by -5%, but average rates rose slightly ( 1%) to US$2.54 a kilo, up 10% compared with the equivalent week last year and significantly above pre-Covid levels ( 43%) compared to June 2019. Combining the figures for the last two full weeks (weeks 24 and 25) reveals a -3% drop in tonnages compared with the previous two weeks (a ‘two-week on two-week’ or ‘2Wo2W’ comparison), with rates up slightly ( 1%), based on a full-market average of spot rates and contract rates. That fall in tonnages was driven by a -10% drop from Middle East & South Asia (MESA) origins, on a 2Wo2W basis, although average rates from MESA during that period rose by a further 5% above their already highly inflated levels compared with the equivalent weeks last year ( 57%, year-on-year, or YoY), boosted by the continuing disruptions to container shipping in and around the region. Based on the more than 450,000 weekly transactions covered by WorldACD’s data, region-to-region figures show big decreases in chargeable weight in both directions between Asia Pacific and MESA (-15% eastbound; -13% westbound), and between Europe and MESA (-12% eastbound; -7% westbound), on a 2Wo2W basis, highlighting that the 2Wo2W decline for the MESA region applies to inbound as well as outbound cargo.
