♻ An insightful week sharing waste management learnings across continents 🌏 Last week we had the privilege of joining Indian government delegates and waste management experts from across Utter Pradesh, Maharashtra, Punjab, and Telangana as they journeyed across the Netherlands to see new and innovative waste value chain technologies in action, and exchange knowledge on best practices within waste management. All to create a cleaner and greener future. A big thank you to the Netherlands Embassy in India and Consulate General of the Netherlands in Mumbai for hosting the programme! We had the wonderful opportunity to facilitate an interactive session on best practices in integrating the informal sector in formal waste supply chains, sharing examples from our 40-years of experience in the sector and insights from our plastic waste management programme in India, FINILOOP. 👇 Below is a picture from just one of the inspiring site visits the delegation made to see innovative waste value chain technologies in action across the Netherlands, with a trip to N.V. Bringing together the joys of colourful building blocks and a team of enthusiastic IKEA Foundation Ambassadors to showcase the complexities and solutions on the path to building more effective waste management systems! 🚮 ♻ 🚛 Last week our business development expert, Pavee Raheja, had the privilege of taking part in the IKEA Foundation’s Ambassador Hub in India creatively introducing our plastic waste-free cities programme, FINILOOP, to IKEA Ambassadors from across the globe. Each ambassador stepped into the role of one of the many stakeholders within a city waste management system and followed the complex journey of the many different types of plastic waste (colourful building blocks). 🌱 Scaling nature-based solutions in Ethiopia! This week local teams have been hard at work making progress on the development of a new constructed wetland in Adama, Ethiopia. A sustainable nature-based solution to the growing problem of overflowing septic tanks polluting local environments. This project follows on from the success of two constructed wetlands in the Shashemene area of Ethiopia. 💦 Constructed wetlands in action – creating cleaner, greener futures! 🌍 This #WorldEnvironmentDay we are shining a light on a nature-based solution to wastewater treatment which has helped to transform two communities in Ethiopia. In the photo below, treated wastewater is being tested for water quality to ensure it is safe for the environment. Wastewater which just a few years ago was overflowing from septic tanks and polluting the condominium residential area of Shashemene, in Central Ethiopia. Fast forward to today and this wastewater is being purified and reused through a constructed wetland. Together with ECOFYT, World Waternet and local partner BBBC, WASTE introduced a new, cost-effective and user-friendly technology to the Shashemene area by constructing two wetlands to treat wastewater safely. As a result, untreated wastewater is no longer left to pollute the environment but instead can be reused for greenery activities and ground water recharge. 🏡 For the 434 local residents this has been transformational, bringing environmental, social, economic and health benefits🌱 A key part of the sustainability of this project has been to work with local government authorities to regularly monitor water quality, and training local resident associations to maintain the system. Something which is ensuring that today the constructed wetlands is continuing to thrive.
