  • Following Moore’s law, electronic chip features are becoming smaller and the chips become more complex. You want to make sure that each step in the complex production process is executed successfully. This is where semiconductor metrology equipment is needed. Because when things get smaller, the metrology equipment needs to improve. Let us introduce you to the cost-effective, high-precision magnetically levitated positioning stage technology, also called: Maglev stage. It allows improvements in positioning accuracy, throughput, and contamination levels, supporting improved metrology equipment. Maglev’s attractiveness lies in its simplicity, using defined design principles. The basic concept is a combination of a 6 degree-of-freedom short stroke maglev drive integrated with a 1 degree-of-freedom linear long stroke drive. The long stroke is dynamically balanced to prevent reaction forces from creating disturbances. The mirrors and laser beams define the interferometry system, an essential component to achieving high-accuracy positioning of the wafer. The maglev guiding is contactless, eliminating an important source of particle and molecular contamination!

For example, we work with CERN, home of the giant particle accelerator facility in Geneva, and with the European Southern Observatory to realise the world's largest telescope in the Atacama desert. Thanks to our partnerships with big science, we can push the boundaries of what’s technically possible and contribute to answering some of life’s biggest questions. This week, our colleagues Hans Priem and Rick Jongen attended the Big Science Business Forum in Triëste. They connected with various businesses and institutions involved in big science, discussing upcoming projects and challenges. This is where optical communication comes in. FSO Instruments Instruments was founded in 2023 by VDL Groep and Demcon. FSO develops and markets optical communication modules for various applications, based on TNO-based technology. FSO Instruments’ mission? To design and bring to market communication systems that offer more bandwidth and increased security, while consuming less power and facing fewer licensing issues than when using conventional radio frequencies. These are the ambitious innovations we thrive on. VDL ETG provides the high-tech contract manufacturing capabilities required to bring this technology reliably to market in volume. In 2023, Cubecat was launched and its functionality proven in flight – a great success! The extremely compact 10x10x10cm optical terminal, developed by TNO, is now commercially available through FSO instruments and its partner AAC Clyde Space , who recently introduced Cubecat into the marketplace and made its first sales. Say goodbye to licensing headaches and speed limitations!

  • The summer break has ended, and we are excited to welcome a group of enthusiastic students to our vocational training program! This program allows students to work 4 days a week and attend school one day a week. 𝐒𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐟𝐮𝐧 𝐟𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐬 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐯𝐨𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐦: 📍 The official opening of the ‘Philips Bedrijfsschool’ in Eindhoven took place on 28 November 1929, back when VDL ETG Eindhoven was still known as Philips Machinefabriek. 📍 This spring, Erik Wessels was honoured as the practice trainer of the year for the engineering and built environment sector. Erik has been with VDL Enabling Technologies Group (ETG) Almelo for over 29 years, with 5 of those years as a practical trainer. 📍 At VDL ETG Almelo alone, we currently have 50 vocational students. After the summer break, 20 new students started at our various VDL ETG companies. 📍 VDL ETG Suzhou has its own welding training centre to train students. 📍 We offer pathways in mechatronics, structural sheet metal, CNC machining and logistics. 📍 Besides working and learning, these students can also sign up for Triple T in Eindhoven and Almelo where they work on their physical and mental health.  Young technical talent is essential to the future of technology.
