🚘 Each year, in partnership with Hyundai Motor Nederland, we organize the Connection Day to make the museum more accessible to seniors who have difficulty experiencing art independently. During this special day, residents from care institution Cordaan travelled to the museum in Hyundai electric cars. The group had a guided tour of the temporary exhibition Vincent van Gogh | Matthew Wong: Painting as a Last Resort, exploring the colourful and expressive work of Matthew Wong and his undeniable artistic and personal connection with Vincent van Gogh. The Van Gogh Museum is deeply grateful to the private donors for their generous five-year support, enabling Franka Blok to be trained as Junior Researcher specializing in Van Gogh's works on paper. She will be supervised by Senior Researcher Teio Meedendorp. Previously Assistant Curator for three years at our museum, Blok aided in acquisitions and contributed to the collection catalogue. Her passion for Van Gogh and works on paper grew during her studies at The Courtauld Institute of Art in London. Until 13 October you can visit the small-scale exhibition ‘Provence Works’ by Jeff Cowen 🖼️ The presentation features recent work by Cowen (b. 1966 in New York). The works are inspired by Provence, the same region in which Van Gogh lived for two years. Both artists reveal the power and beauty of nature: from the immensity of mountain landscapes and fields to the smallest detail found in a simple leaf or fruit. Cowen uses photography to convey his connection with the landscape. He makes large analogue prints on thick photographic paper and experiments with the chemicals that he uses for the photographic development process. Simultaneously with our presentation, Huis Marseille, Museum for Photography in Amsterdam presents the exhibition Provence Works by Jeff Cowen until 13 October 2024. Upcoming exhibition 🖼️ In March 2025 the Van Gogh Museum and Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam join forces to stage a major exhibition of one of the most important artists of our time: Anselm Kiefer. Kiefer’s oeuvre is inextricably linked to both museums and to the Netherlands. Since the beginning of his career, Kiefer has been inspired by Vincent van Gogh and his admiration is still visible in his work today. The Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam played an important role in recognizing Kiefer’s work during his early career. Especially for this exhibition, Kiefer has created new works that have never been seen before. The exhibition will be on show from the 7th of March until 9th of June 2025. Sunday Lecture: Gustav Klimt’s Stoclet Frieze June 16th, 2-3 pm, Van Gogh Museum Auditorium   Debora Silverman, Distinguished Professor Emeritus and University of California Presidential Chair in Modern European History, Art and Culture at UCLA, is this year’s Visiting Fellow at the Van Gogh Museum. She will give a lecture on the intriguing story behind Gustav Klimt’s Stoclet Frieze (1905-11). This large three-part mosaic was made for the Brussels villa of businessman Adolphe Stoclet. Today, we proudly present our new acquisition: ‘Clovis Sleeping’ by Paul Gauguin. The painting is a key work in Gauguin’s oeuvre, and the first Impressionist painting by the artist to be added to our collection. Gauguin pictured his five-year-old son soundly asleep. Next to the child is a large Norwegian tankard. Extraordinarily, Gauguin painted Clovis and the tankard from life, but blended in imaginary elements. The decorative motif in the background suggests the sleeping child’s dream world. This adds symbolism, ambiguity and mystery to the work. Gauguin combined his Impressionist technique and use of colour with a deeper layer of meaning in this work. ‘Clovis Sleeping’ was a breakthrough, and precipitated the Symbolic style for which he became renowned. The acquisition has been made possible with support from the VriendenLoterij, the Vereniging Rembrandt (Rembrandt Association, with the additional support from its Dorodarte Kunst Fonds and the annual contribution of het Cultuurfonds) and the members of the Yellow House Circle. Nieuwe tentoonstelling 🖼️ In ons museum De Mesdag Collectie in Den Haag is dit najaar de eerste tentoonstelling van de Franse kunstenaar Rosa Bonheur (1822-1899) in Nederland te zien. Rosa Bonheur was een onafhankelijke vrouw die een eigengereid leven leidde op haar landgoed bij het bos van Fontainebleau. Ze werd beroemd door haar doorvoelde, monumentale schilderijen van dieren. Ze streefde ernaar dieren zo objectief mogelijk af te beelden en tegelijkertijd door te dringen tot hun ziel. De tentoonstelling toont diverse landschapsstudies, tekeningen, olieverfschetsen en sculpturen, waarin haar maakproces goed zichtbaar is. De werken sluiten daarmee aan bij de voorliefde van Hendrik Willem Mesdag en Sientje Mesdag-van Houten, die veel schetsmatige werken van collega-kunstenaars verzamelden.
