Sprawl is bad for #education and #publichealth: “Fifty years ago, about half of all students walked or biked to school nationally. Far fewer do now. These days, roughly one in 10 students #walk or #bike to school, according to the most recently available data on household #transportation choices from 2022. One reason is the distance between #homes and #schools has grown.“ — Atlanta Journal-Constitution (article link in comments)

What happens when we tear up the asphalt? Is #Brussels leaving behind car-centric planning and cobbling a new path towards a human-scale city? What will it take to right-size city streets and reclaim space for people, nature, and peace? Right outside my hotel, I saw street construction teams working hard on their craft. Tearing up this asphalt makes the change so visceral. I cycled the city and couldn’t help but feel the difference. There’s a long way ahead, but wow - you can feel the momentum.

🤨A #transportation official in #India tries to justify increasing space for motorists at the expense of another mode: “…West Bengal transport minister Snehasis Chakraborty told the media: ‘The population and vehicular count of #Kolkata have multiplied several times but the city’s roads have not widened. Road space continues to hover around 6% which is way less than #Mumbai’s 18% and #Delhi’s 10%.’” More road space for motorists results in more congestion, thanks to induced demand. For example, see every other car-dependent country. 🫳🎤 https://lnkd.in/eGNnnPr3

Are self-driving cars doomed in the US? This fine levied by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration NHTSA against Cruise may seem steep, but it pales in comparison to what this company and other autonomous vehicle developers face from civil lawsuits in future crashes. That’s because plaintiff attorneys may now be able to point to this incident and resultant fine as evidence that such tech is inherently dangerous. Under US law, civil lawsuits do not have to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt, as in the case of criminal cases. This creates an opportunity for very large lawsuits to be successful or settled for a tremendous sum. If self-driving car development ultimately goes the way of that for flying cars, which are often promised but never delivered in a practical form, what does this mean for US streets? Traffic levels remain terrible, both in terms of congestion and as a public health threat, in major cities. Transit investment is becoming unsustainably expensive. Bikes (including e-bikes) and other micromobility can offer an alternative, but not without space carved out from that which is dedicated to other modes—something that is politically difficult. #selfdrivingcars #tech #bikes #micromobility #cities #law Possible paywall👉https://lnkd.in/eYFRSey9 MSN link👉https://lnkd.in/erTwwYGE

“This is going to make some New Yorkers mad, but we need to look at what #Paris is doing with its streets…charging triple to park large S.U.V.s, closing more than 100 streets to cars, getting rid of about 50,000 parking spots and planning to add more than 800 miles of bike lanes.” Dodai Stewart capturing the “joyous peacefulness” and the “humane sound levels” of a bike-friendly city. https://lnkd.in/eQ_uBugQ

How can space for cycling be recognized (adopted!) by all levels of government in the pan European community and beyond? What an experience to give a keynote and represent the Chair of Cycling Ghent University at United Nations. Thank you Roel Janssens and the committee for the invitation. Hurricane Helene is causing a lot of damage in the southeastern US, but it is also pointing out a possible flaw in how #infrastructure for #bikes and other #micromobility is situated. In car-dependent cultures like this, planners and advocates will place paths in flood zones along waterways, because they cannot be safely developed or—and this is key—used for #car infrastructure. If roads are placed in flood zones, they can’t be used at all times or they could be damaged. Bike paths are essentially being plopped down in places no one else wants. If bike/micromobility paths aren’t considered to be vital infrastructure that needs to be placed in safe locations, can they ever be competitive with roads in terms of mode share? Before you say that bikes (particularly #ebikes) cannot compete with cars no matter where paths are located, look around The Netherlands, Denmark, Paris, and other places where the car is no longer so dominant. What does it take for bike infrastructure to be considered worthy of being safely located?
