  • Students from the Maastricht Science Programme are conducting the first systematic excavation at Maastricht's limestone quarry, Sint-Pietersberg! Maastricht has been known for its fossil-rich subsoil for centuries, including the first mosasaur discovery. The Maastrichtian epoch, which occurred between 72 and 66 million years ago, is named after this region.     โ›๏ธ Students hunting for fossils in the ENCI quarry ๐Ÿฆ• Moving orange spots on a yellow background are the first indication that something unusual is taking place in Maastricht's limestone quarry, Sint-Pietersberg. A closer look reveals that these are people clothed in orange vests. They are Maastricht Science Programme students and supervisors. In July, they carried out the first systematic excavation, which Maastricht University is conducting. Maastricht has been known for its fossil-rich subsoil for centuries. The first mosasaur rose from the ground in Maastricht, making the city famous until today. Maastrichtian is the name of a geological epoch that took place between 72 and 66 million years ago. "Until a few years ago, limestone was extracted from the quarry on a daily basis, making research nearly impossible. Everything happened on the fly, as soon as something extraordinary, like a mosasaur, was discovered. For the first time, Maastricht University can perform a systematic study of the fossils in the Maastrichtian," says Leon Claessens, professor of palaeontology at the Maastricht University - Faculty of Science and Engineering. The final decision will be made at the governmental level by the European countries supporting the Einstein Telescope project. The committee responsible for site selection and the procedures involved are still under development. It is clear that the committee will consist of representatives from the countries that have shown support for the project.     Conservation Biologist | Assistant Professor of Planetary Health at Maastricht University

    The incredible story of #Jacob, the three-legged lion that swam the equivalent of an Olympic triathlon distance, has been featured in every major news outlet globally - reaching millions of people. What does this mean for #conservation and #planetary #health? This tells us that the struggles Jacob has faced resonate with people, and that people care deeply about nature. Jacob has been repeatedly caught in poachers' snares and steel traps (how he lost his leg), his family was poisoned for their body parts, and he has lost substantial habitat that would connect him with potential mates. In a lot of ways, Jacob is symbol of what wildlife, and biodiversity more broadly, are facing in an increasingly human-dominated world. Rising and shifting demands for food production, energy and mining infrastructure, land-clearing for roadways and urban development, and overexploitation/poaching are just a few of the many human pressures impacting countless species and ecosystems globally. As scientists, every day we are learning more about the impacts of losing species and ecosystems on human health and well-being. Like many species, large carnivores like Jacob are important ecosystem regulators - that is, they are critically positioned in ecological food webs - and their loss can trigger cascades that impact entire ecosystems and possibly human communities. The flow-on effects of losing these species involve disease risk, agricultural productivity, and local tourism economies, among others. Therefore, the question of whether or not to protect and restore wildlife and ecosystems goes beyond the species themselves and relates directly to our health and well-being. While Jacob the lion has had his fair share of tough times, we hope that his story will continue to resonate with people to generate momentum for policies and practices that reduce human impacts on biodiversity and that promotes protection and restoration of Earth's remaining protected areas.     Recently, 10 fundamental NWO (Dutch Research Council) projects were awarded in the first round of Circular Plastics NL. It is my pleasure to announce that the Circular Plastics team at Maastricht University - Faculty of Science and Engineering is leading two of them and participating in another. My congratulations to the project leaders: Ali Gooneie for his project Sustainable and fire-safe plastics based on fully organic phosphorus-sulfur compounds (SuFiP-S), aiming at sustainable fire retardation of PP. Steven De Meester for his project CLEANpack: Towards food safe Closed Loop rEcycling of pAckagiNg, using a combination of mechanical (including dissolution) recycling tehcnologies to investigate the possibility for closed-loop recycling of polyolefin-based food packaging.   • What can ceramic roofing tiles tell us about ancient societies? Dr. Kyle Jazwaโ€™s newly published book, The Tiled Roof Phenomenon in Early Helladic Greece: Evidence from Zygouries, explores this question through a detailed analysis of 4500-year-old roofing tiles from Early Helladic Greece. Jazwa combines technological studies, engineering, and archaeology to uncover the production methods and social significance of these ancient tiles. His research began in 2017 and has since expanded to include comprehensive studies of tiles from sites like Lerna and Zygouries. In his work, Jazwa highlights the labour-intensive process of creating ceramic-tiled roofs and their sociopolitical implications in the Early Bronze Age. His examination of impressions and markings on individual tiles not only catalogues the tiles, but also reconstructs the production methods, offering new insights into prehistoric innovation and social organisation, thus giving us a broader understanding of the economic and social structures of Early Helladic Greece.     Conservation Biologist | Assistant Professor of Planetary Health at Maastricht University

    Our research team in Uganda has been tracking one of Africa's toughest lions. Jacob has been gored by a buffalo, his family was poisoned for lion body part trade, he was caught in a poacherโ€™s snare, and finally lost his leg in another attempted poaching incident where he was caught in a steel trap. And just when we thought he had been through enough, our team filmed him and his brother swimming the longest distance ever recorded by African lions: 1.5km across the Kazinga Channel of the Queen Elizabeth National Park, a waterway with some of the highest densities of crocodiles and hippos in Uganda. We think they took this risk to try to access female lions - a population that has declined in recent years due to human pressures. This embattled lion is a stark example of the challenges facing biodiversity in an increasingly human dominated world.
