  • This year’s #IAWA scholarship goes to Master's student Tanya Spee! Tanya Spee is a student in the Honour Programme in Aerospace Engineering at TU Delft, specializing in ‘Robotics’ and ‘Space Flight.’ As a busy person, she is often found in diverse and unexpected environments, which truly define who she is and where her passion lies. Tanya works as a Space System Engineering intern at Ubotica Technologies and as a trainee at the Royal Netherlands Air Force, where she focuses on #spaceengineering. In her spare time, she picks up a camera to photograph people for various social projects or even steps in front of it as a model for different art projects. Tanya: "𝘞𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘷𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘵𝘺 𝘪𝘯 𝘮𝘺 𝘴𝘵𝘶𝘥𝘪𝘦𝘴, 𝘫𝘰𝘣𝘴, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘩𝘰𝘣𝘣𝘪𝘦𝘴, 𝘐 𝘢𝘮 𝘧𝘳𝘦𝘲𝘶𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘭𝘺 𝘴𝘶𝘳𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘥 𝘣𝘺 𝘮𝘦𝘯. Congratulations to #aetudelft researchers Vahid Yaghoubi and Kunal Masania, and co-researchers from the University of Groningen, who have been awarded funding from #NWO under the Open Technology Programme for their research to develop a new advanced methodology for quality assurance in metal additive manufacturing 👏🏻 Additive Manufacturing (AM) or 3D printing technology (3DP) is fundamentally transforming manufacturing processes in various industries. However, the risks associated with less than ideal printing conditions pose challenges for ensuring the safe quality of AM parts and affect their strength and consistency. 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗮𝗶𝗺𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗮𝗱𝗱𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘀𝗲 𝗶𝘀𝘀𝘂𝗲𝘀 𝗯𝘆 𝗱𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻 𝗮𝗱𝘃𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗱 𝘃𝗶𝗯𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗡𝗼𝗻-𝗗𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗧𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 (𝗡𝗗𝗧) 𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗱𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗾𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗮𝘀𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗔𝗠. This innovative approach will integrate data-driven modeling, model frequency analysis, and Transparent AI to ensure quality assurance in metal additive manufacturing (AM). • 💡💥 Ant insights lead to robot navigation breakthrough! Have you ever wondered how #insects are able to go so far beyond their home and still find their way? The answer to this question is not only relevant to biology but also to making the #AI for tiny, autonomous robots. #aetudelft drone-researchers Tom van Dijk, Christophe De Wagter and Guido De Croon felt inspired by biological findings on how ants visually recognize their environment and combine it with counting their steps in order to get safely back home. They have used these insights to create an insect-inspired autonomous navigation strategy for tiny, lightweight robots. The strategy allows such robots to come back home after long trajectories, while requiring extremely little computation and memory (1.16 kiloByte per 100 m). In the future, tiny autonomous robots could find a wide range of uses, from monitoring stock in warehouses to finding gas leaks in industrial sites. The researchers have published their findings in #ScienceRobotics, on July 17, 2024. Continue reading 👉🏻 https://lnkd.in/exb5p-R5 #tudelft #aerospaceengineering #drones #peopleofAE

  • 🎉 Congratulations to Dr. Jian Guo and his team from TU Delft | Aerospace Engineering and TU Delft | Civil Engineering and Geosciences! 🛰 Their innovative research proposal, Alticube , has been selected by European Space Agency - ESA for further development with a team of ESA experts. 🌊 Dr. Guo explains, “The goal of Alticube is to measure water levels worldwide more frequently, accurately, and cost-effectively. This will provide better insights into changes in height and currents, essential for improved early warning systems and a better understanding of the long-term global water system.” Alticube aims to link multiple small satellites, CubeSats, with long deployable booms to create a relatively inexpensive long baseline of ten meters or more. This baseline is necessary for creating detailed 3D images. This breakthrough will significantly enhance our ability to monitor and respond to global water level changes, contributing to a safer and more sustainable future. • Congratulations to Santiago Valencia Ibáñez who has been awarded first place at the 20th Pegasus-Europe AIAA student conference 2024 for his Master’s thesis on system architecture optimization in aerospace engineering 👏 His work aims to prevent the premature dismissal of product architectures that could lead to the best-performing designs, crucial for next-generation, sustainable aircraft. The results of Valencia Ibáñez's thesis make it easier to identify the most promising and feasible designs. “Winning this prize is a great honor," Valencia Ibáñez says. "It means I’ll get to participate in the worldwide AIAA International Student Conference next year, and I also received a cash prize!” https://lnkd.in/ejYTgnvt #aetudelft #tudelft #aerospaceengineering #thesis #award #peopleofAE

  • ✈️ “You can make a great sustainable airplane. But if there’s no airfield where it can get its fuel, because it’s hydrogen, and if it can’t land, then it won’t be used. You’ve created a museum piece. You have to address the entire system.” 📽️ What does it take to achieve sustainable aviation?
