I have something to share which could be very useful for everyone, being a CEO/founder/or OG employee that is experiencing a similar startup/scale-up journey. Sharing learnings is the key to helping others 💡. This time, I would like to share one of the most important stories and learnings during my scale-up journey. For the past few years, I’ve had an idea of how we can help our customers simultaneously automate and bring back natural conversations. I know this sounds contradictory, but with AI nowadays, I believe this is possible. So why did I not succeed in getting that idea off the shelf in the first place when I had the opportunity to realise it? Simply put, I was in the wrong position back then (approximately 2 years ago as the CEO) to execute that idea quickly. I was managing and trying to inspire teams, but the business was in a capacity/priority stretch combined with an unclear ICP (Ideal Customer Profile), and a product that had grown over 7 years with some legacy struggles. These are common challenges for scale-ups, but it was the first time for me. When we decided, as the founding team, to hire a COO/CEO so I could move back to product as CPO, working together with our co-founder/CTO and new CEO on the strategy, things started to change positively. At first, I thought that by becoming the CPO, I could make the impact on the product that I wanted to make. However, I realised that I was spending most of my time being there for my direct reports, trying to be a good manager (with 9 direct reports). I quickly realised that this took up most of my time, ensuring that everyone under my wings had everything they needed to learn, thrive and stay motivated. Fortunately, our CEO, Marili, spotted something and suggested if I was open to hiring a Head of Product, so I would have more time for the strategic and product creation part. With success, by hiring Rowan, our Head of Product, I had time to truly think about what Trengo can be in the future and what needs to be done right now, like integrating AI into our products and having the opportunity to start a new product team (a startup in a startup) with just our CTO, just like 9 years ago when it all started, to embark on the idea myself that I have in mind already for more than 2 years now. This path has resulted in the following learnings: 👉 I’ve maximised my energy and have time to focus on what I’m passionate about. 👉 I have more free time, which I need as a creative person and as CPO for strategic topics and to think about the future. 👉 The company gets the most out of me, and the people around me have now a more experienced manager. 👉 And by all the above, I hope the people around me have a more inspiring founder/CPO. In my next post I will tell you about what our CTO and I are working with Trengo 👏. We just built the first beta/MVP within 4 weeks and I promise you, that this is something BIG and will be a break-through for our customers (and their customers) 🚀!
