Over ons

Tony’s Chocolonely is an impact company that makes chocolate, committed to ending exploitation in cocoa. And not just the cocoa in our chocolate, but in all chocolate worldwide. Tony's Chocolonely was founded in 2005 by 3 journalists from the Dutch TV show ‘Keuringsdienst van Waarde’ after they discovered that the world’s largest chocolate manufacturers were buying cocoa from plantations that used illegal labor. Since then, we've dedicated our efforts to raising awareness of and eliminating inequality in the cocoa industry, becoming the #1 chocolate brand in the Netherlands. With incredibly tasty chocolate, we lead by example and show the world that chocolate can be made differently: in taste, packaging and the way we do business with cocoa farmers. Starting with paying them a higher price. Alone, we’ll end exploitation in our cocoa supply chain, but together we can change the industry across the globe. That's why we invite everyone to join our commitment. 'Cause it's only together that we'll end exploitation in cocoa.

Delaying our collective fight against deforestation puts progress on hold. ✋🚫 And the European Commission should see that, too. Instead, they’re proposing to delay the European Union Deforestation Regulation (#EURD) by an extra 12 months, pushing the deadline to December 2025.  But our planet can’t wait that long.🌍⌛️ The proposed delay is concerning, as research shows that by 2050, huge areas of Ghana Côte d’Ivoire are projected to become unsuitable for cocoa production, affecting generations of farmers. We can’t let that happen.  Cocoa farmers are already feeling the heat from #climatechange, with production dropping by about 30% – making it nearly impossible for farmers to earn a living income, even with higher cocoa prices. ❌ We need urgent action to protect the planet and stop cocoa-driven deforestation. And given the new guidance issued, meeting the original timeline was possible. We urge the EU Commission to reject any further delays and to keep their commitment towards the planet and its people.  We’re looking at you, Ursula von der Leyen Maroš Šefčovič Virginijus Sinkevičius Manfred Weber Pascal Canfin Marie Toussaint Gerben-Jan Gerbrandy Herbert Dorfmann Christophe Hansen Delara Burkhardt Ingeborg ter Laak

📣 A fairer future requires bold regulations. That’s why we co-signed a (very) serious letter to Ursula von der Leyen, together with our friends and fellow front-runners Patagonia, Oatly, Ecosia, Natura Triodos Bank. Together, we’re calling on the European Commission to take strong steps in its new mandate to support responsible businesses and foster a sustainable economy. ✅ We need the EU to uphold its 2030 #GreenDeal targets, reducing emissions by at least 55% compared to 1990. And we won’t stand by while some try to delay or reopen legislation that supports this deal, like the European Deforestation Regulation (#EUDR). At Tony’s, we’re all about leading by example to drive industry-wide change, as we work towards ending exploitation in cocoa. Success for us means improving farmers’ livelihoods, while continuing to grow our company – to prove that the 2 can go hand in hand. 🤝🌍 But we don’t just wanna raise the bar for ourselves, we wanna raise the floor for everyone. ✊ We believe all companies should be held accountable for their supply chain, to protect both people and the planet. So that together, we deliver the social environmental progress the world so urgently needs.  Who’s with us? 🙌

The new cocoa season is here! And we’re scaling up our impact – big time. 📈 Starting today, Tony’s Open Chain, our collaborative initiative for change, will be sourcing cocoa from an extra 8 co-ops in Côte d’Ivoire Ghana. That’s about 13,200 (!!) more farmers than last season, a whoppin’ 62% increase. 💪🌍 And they’ll all receive a higher price for their cocoa long-term, enabling them to earn a living income and escape poverty. This amazing growth is mainly because we’re welcoming more (and more) Mission Allies to Tony’s Open Chain, each of whom adds to the total number of beans we source responsibly, according to Tony’s 5 Sourcing Principles – our tried-and-true rules for ending exploitation in cocoa. Cocoa sourced using Tony’s 5 Sourcing Principles is 100% deforestation-free, contributes significantly to farmer incomes and helps to reduce child labor from 46.7% (industry average) to 4.4% at long-term partner co-ops. ✅ And the more beans we source, the more impact we make, driving real change for millions of cocoa-farming families. 🤝🍫 Happy new cocoa season! #cocoaseason #tonyschocolonely #positiveimpact #poverty #childlabor #fairtrade #westafrica #livingincome

Less than 100 days left? We've had decades to prepare – deforestation is out of control.. it's time to take a stand for EUDR! 📣🌳  At Tony’s Chocolonely, we exist to end exploitation in the cocoa industry together. This includes fighting the three main issues in cocoa: lack of a living income, child labor, ánd deforestation. That’s why we fully back the European Union Deforestation Regulation (#EUDR). Cocoa is one of the main drivers of deforestation in Ghana and Côte d'Ivoire, and we won’t stand by while some try to delay or reopen this crucial regulation. The time to act is now! 🌍 Here’s what we demand:   1. No delays in rolling out the EUDR. Companies need to apply the EUDR from December 30th, 2024. 2. No reopening of the text. 3. European Commission, we remain curious, so let’s get those guidelines and FAQs out there now! We believe that bold regulations should raise the floor for all companies to protect both people and planet. Let’s raise the bar together and urgently put an end to deforestation in cocoa! 🙌🍫 So, what do you say, are you in? Celebrating cocoa communities. 🍫🤝 Our Chocolonely Foundation teamed up with NOOR Images, World Press Photo Foundation and several West African photographers to capture life, family and work in cocoa communities, unfiltered, and celebrating their rich diversity. Each from their unique perspective. We're thrilled that their pictures are featured in the exhibition "Celebrating communities", by NOOR and World Press Photo, that is traveling through Cote d’Ivoire this month. The project shows the profound impact of community on individuals and societies both globally and locally. 🌍 The photographers who are part of the exhibition, like Guerchom NDEBO, Massow Ka, Fabrice Mbonankira, Olivier Khouadiani, Maroussia Mbaye and Justin Makangara, received 8 months of mentoring through NOOR Images and the Chocolonely Foundation. The program enabled them to further develop their craft while shining a light on important stories of people at the beginning of the cocoa supply chain. Want to see more of the photos they took as part of this project? They’re featured throughout our latest annual FAIR report. Flip through the pages and feast your eyes: https://lnkd.in/g49HFsu4 Photo credit: Justin Makangara 📸 Psst.. Even though the Chocolonely Foundation shares our choc-tastic name, it’s actually an independent foundation that exists to strengthen cocoa communities in Ghana Côte d’Ivoire. 💪 To support their work, we donate 1% of our net revenue to it every year. 💰

5 years ⏳ That’s 60 months, 1,826 days and maybe just 1 new Adele album (if any 👀).. But it’s also how long we commit to buying cocoa from farmers, as part of Tony’s 5 Sourcing Principles. AKA our tried-and-true rules for ending exploitation in cocoa. ✊🍫 Earlier, we explained the first 2 principles. Today, we’re unwrapping #3.. 3️⃣ committing to the long term At Tony’s, this means we partner with cocoa farmers for at least 5 years. And so do all our Mission Allies (= other choco brands that source cocoa via Tony’s Open Chain, our collaborative initiative for change). Our oldest partner is ABOCFA, and we’ve worked with them for almost 20 years! 🤝 This long-term commitment gives cocoa farmers income security. And together with our other sourcing principles, this will lift them out of poverty – the root cause of exploitation. ❌ Ohhh yeah, our way of working works! That’s why we invite every choco company to source like us, through Tony’s Open Chain. We’ll be back soon to unwrap our 4th principle! 🙌🏼 #Tonys5SourcingPrinciples #TonysChocolonely #Transparency #LongTerm #Commitment #Fairtrade #Cocoa #Chocolate #CocoaFarmers #EndingExploitation

Healthier farmers means stronger farmers. 💪❤️ Which is why we’re very excited to share that all the farmers we work with in Ghana ( their households!) will be receiving better healthcare, thanks to the Chocolonely Foundation Elucid. The program will include.. ☝️ enrollment in Ghana’s national health insurance ✌️cover for additional essential care that’s not covered by national insurance, with a special focus on maternal care 🖖 regular vision respiratory health screenings It will run for the next 6 years, with farmers gradually taking over the insurance cost. And as always, we’ll keep paying them a higher price for their cocoa, enabling all farmers we work with to earn a living income. ’Cause just like access to healthcare, that’s their human right. 🤝 #ChocolonelyFoundation #healthcare #cocoafarmers #cocoa #chocolate #cocoaindustry #partnership #farmers #Ghana #livingincome

We’re back with another “so that’s what they mean!” post, where we explain Tony’s 5 Sourcing Principles – our tried-and-true rules to end exploitation in cocoa. ‘Cause we mention them a lot, but we might not have explained them (very) well.. Until now! We unwrapped our 1st principle (traceability) last month, now let’s dive into the 2nd one.. 2️⃣ paying farmers a higher price And not just when cocoa prices are high, but all 👏 the 👏 time 👏. Yeppp, for every bean we buy, we pay cocoa farmers the Living Income Reference Price (LIRP), set by Fairtrade International. This higher price enables farmers to earn a living income – a basic human right. And because we commit to this price long-term, we also provide farmers with income stability, getting them out of poverty and enabling them to invest in their farms. Ohhh yeah, our way of working works! That’s why we invite every chocolate company to source cocoa like us, via Tony’s Open Chain – aka our collaborative initiative for change. We’ll be back soon to unwrap our 3rd principle! Can’t wait?
