According to a report from TradeWinds, A.P. Moller - Maersk has recently made enquiries to shipyards about building a series of 12 new LNG dual-fuelled container ships of around 16,000 teu. The leading shipowner is also reported to have lined up time charters on at least 10 new LNG dual-fuelled container ships. While we see the benefits of alternative fuels, we are focusing on LNG and liquefied biomethane (LBM). LNG supply infrastructure has matured over 60 years of safe operations with LNG currently available all around the world, it is both cost competitive and offers immediate emissions reductions. And more importantly, liquefied biomethane (LBM) and then renewable e-methane both benefit from this strong LNG foundation. Green fuel availability and the LNG pathway’s emissions head start appear to be two of the reasons for Maersk exploring other alternative fuels than methanol. As TradeWinds stated: “The company is aiming to run its methanol dual-fuelled boxships on green methanol and has been investing in its own production of the alternative fuel. But until these supplies emerge at volume, Maersk is faced with running the vessels on grey methanol or very low-sulphur fuel oil, neither of which will match LNG’s 20% CO2 emissions reductions.” Get in contact to find out more about LBM bunkering and read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/dGC74Hmb (€) #AlternativeFuels #EnergyTransition #LNG #LBM #Shipping

📢 Another industry-first! We have completed the first-ever LNG bunkering operation by ship in the port of Cuxhaven. Our bunker vessel ‘Optimus’ swiftly, safely and successfully delivered LNG to the dredger ‘Vox Ariane,’ operated by long-term client Van Oord. Our ship-to-ship bunkering in Cuxhaven represents a pioneering step in the region's LNG infrastructure development, as the port had previously only seen LNG operations conducted via truck and currently only permits LNG bunkering at one berth. LNG infrastructure development is part of a broader trend, with more ports across Germany adopting LNG operations to support shipping’s clean fuels transition. Improved LNG bunkering capabilities in Cuxhaven, a Niedersachsen Ports GmbH & Co. KG port, also open up the pathway to maritime decarbonisation via liquified biomethane (LBM) and then renewable e-methane going forwards. We will bunker ISCC-EU certified mass balanced liquefied biomethane (LBM) to all UECC’s LNG dual fuel car carriers this month. The series of major LBM bunkering operations will take place in the Port of Zeebrugge. UECC’s pure car and truck carriers (PCTCs) will use 100% LBM, also known as bio-LNG, as part of the company’s ‘Green Gas Month’. Congratulations to UECC for kicking off ‘Green Gas Month’ and we’re delighted to supply you with LBM as a clean marine fuel. Daniel Gent, Energy & Sustainability Manager at UECC commented on the news: “We are providing our customers with a great springboard to further their own decarbonisation strategies…the use of LBM as a marine fuel [also] reduces UECC’s, and our customer’s exposure to the costs of emitting within the EU ETS.” Flip Dankelman, Trader at Titan, said: “The mass balanced LBM via Fluxys’ LNG Terminal in Zeebrugge is a practical, realistic and cost-competitive way to use clean marine fuels today. And the UECC team has valued the flexibility that our fleet of strategically located LNG bunker vessels can offer.” To find out more, please visit: https://lnkd.in/eeWmhBy2 #ShipsAndShipping #LNG #LBM #Decarbonisation

As an independent marine fuel supplier committed to delivering all fuels that can substantially decarbonise shipping, we welcome the findings of the recent Sphera Study stating that ammonia can offer a cut of up to 61% in shipping’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. This figure is compared with the emissions of current oil-based marine fuels measured from well-to-wake.   The study, titled the 1st Life Cycle GHG Emission Study on the Use of Ammonia as Marine Fuel, was commissioned by the Society for Gas as a Marine Fuel (SGMF - Leading safe maritime decarbonisation). It was conducted in accordance with the ISO - International Organization for Standardization principles and was reviewed by a panel of independent academic experts. This research also uses the latest primary data from all major engine original equipment manufacturers to assess emissions reductions using all major engine types and global sources of supply. This study followed the same thorough peer review process and rigorous research criteria as the 2nd Lifecycle GHG Emission Study on the use of LNG as a Marine Fuel by Sphera; we are pleased that we now have clearer visibility of the ammonia pathway’s GHG emissions and can compare it with the LNG pathway. We would encourage this research to be done for all alternative fuels to allow for clearer comparisons and more transparent collaboration on clean fuel scaling and uptake.   Today, liquefied biomethane (LBM) is the fuel of choice for many shipowners as, alongside renewable e-methane, it provides a clear pathway to net-zero GHG emissions. It also has a strong safety, cost, infrastructure and emissions foundation based on LNG as a marine fuel. However, we recognise that decarbonisation will require a range of solutions, and when other alternative fuels become realistic at scale, we are ready to add them to our supply portfolio. With this new study, ammonia has taken a key step towards being a viable decarbonisation solution.   You can access both Sphera’s ammonia study and its LNG study via its research page: https://lnkd.in/ebZByuzS   #ammonia #marinefuels #shipsandshipping #shipping

Martyn Lasek, Managing Director of Ship & Bunker, has recently completed a strong analysis of conventional and alternative fuel bunker demand based on the global orderbook for new vessels. Using DNV and Clarksons Research data, Martyn has shown that: - The current orderbook represents 33.8 million mt of bunker demand, 15.6 million mt (46%) of that demand is alternative bunker fuels. - Container ships account for 6.2 million mt (40%) of that total demand and gas carriers and container ships combined make up 9.6 million mt (62%) of that demand. - 10.5 million mt (31%) of total orderbook demand is for LNG, 3.2 million mt (10%) is for methanol, and 1.9 million mt (6%) is for other alternative fuels. High demand for LNG, combined with tightening environmental regulations and more ambitious emissions targets, means greater demand prospects for LBM (liquified biomethane). Depending on the feedstock source and engine technology used, LBM can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 80% compared to marine diesel on a full Well-to-Wake basis. If avoided emissions are considered, LBM can even be net-negative, capturing methane that would otherwise be released into the atmosphere. At Titan, we remain ready to supply all clean fuels that can significantly decarbonise shipping as they become realistic, but we recognise the LNG pathway currently has a head start in terms of demand and supply. A new global coalition, E-NG Coalition, has been set up to support the production and uptake of e-natural gas (e-NG), also known as renewable e-methane or e-LNG, to facilitate the decarbonisation of certain industrial activities, particularly those that are difficult to electrify. Did you know that e-methane is expected to be one of the most cost competitive e-fuels? A major obstacle to increased uptake of e-fuels is the large price gap to conventional fuels. However, although e-methane may have a higher cost in absolute terms than fossil LNG, it is one of the most competitive e-fuels out there. Last week the EU Hydrogen bank announced the results of its first auction to determine which renewable hydrogen projects would provide environmental benefits for the lowest cost to taxpayers, and an e-methane production project came out as the lowest cost of 132 renewable hydrogen projects. Established and proven LNG supply chain infrastructure can also be used to store, transport and smoothly deliver e-methane – removing another major cost. E-methane’s ability to ‘drop-in’ and mix with LNG and liquified biomethane (LBM) as a blend is also a key part in keeping costs down. Our Director of Renewable Fuels Caspar Gooren recently spoke about the LNG pathway to shipping's decarbonisation on the The Maritime Vision podcast. In this wide-reaching conversation that covered LNG bunkering in detail, Caspar discussed the importance of traceable and transparent clean fuel supply chains, as well as the availability, emissions and cost benefits of LNG and liquefied biomethane (LBM/bio-LNG) over alternatives today. “On the cost side, LNG is an attractive fuel compared to marine gas oil or marine diesel oil…bio is still two to three times more expensive than LNG, so we need to narrow that gap; analysis [shows] that this should be reduced in a couple of years [to be only] up to 30% more expensive than normal LNG due to lowering in costs and the higher cost of regulations [and] of compliance.” Thank you to Paul-louis Holi for the interview and click here to watch it in full: https://lnkd.in/evNHzkYn #ShipsAndShipping #LNG #LBM #Maritime
