HOW CAN ART, AND ARCHITECTURE LEAD US TOWARDS DATA ENLIGHTENMENT? Reflecting on an extraordinary meaningful conversation Georg Vrachliotis had with Peter Weibel, the well-known artist, curator, theorist, and longtime director of the ZKM Karlsruhe, Center for Art and Media, it's remarkable how our thoughts on the history and future of #art and #architecture in the digital age resonate even more deeply today: from the politicization of art to the monopoly of data. Republished for THE NEW OPEN we explored the notion of #opencodes not just as a tool for #empowerment but also as a #commodity co-opted by tech giants. With Peter's sad passing last March, our discussion about the need to #refine and #share data concerning architecture and the #builtenvironment has become more urgent and relevant than ever. This dialogue emphasizes the importance of shaping a more #informedfuture. For everyone at the intersection of #art, #design, #architecture, #technology, and #digitalculture, Peter Weibel's insights serve as a profound source of inspiration. 👉 Visit: https://newopen.design/ Delft University of Technology Kees Kaan AiDAPT Lab Prof. Christiane Riedel Manuela Triggianese Seyran Khademi Fatemeh Mostafavi Fabian Scheurer Casper van Engelenburg Angela Rout Gent Shehu Hrvoje Smidihen The Museum of Modern Art Massachusetts Institute of Technology Refik Anadol Studio

HOW CAN OPENNESS TRANSFORM URBAN TECHNOLOGY AND DESIGN EDUCATION? In an enlightening discussion for THE NEW OPEN, Bryan Boyer, the director of the Urban Technology Program at the Taubman College of Architecture Urban Planning, University of Michigan, shares his perspectives on how embracing openness can transform our urban landscapes in today’s data-centric world. Bryan provides a fascinating look into the dynamics of open versus closed data, shedding light on their profound implications for economic and social value. His analysis challenges us to rethink traditional limitations that hinder creativity and limit access to information, advocating for a more inclusive and impactful approach to design of our living environment. For all of you at the crossroads of #design, #architecture, #technology, and #urbanplanning, Bryan’s insights offer a treasure trove of inspiration. How has the principle of openness influenced your work, and what measures can we adopt to further integrate this approach into our projects and research? 👉 Visit: https://newopen.design/ #OpenData #DesignInnovation #Collaboration #Snohetta #urbantechnology #DataDrivenDesign #UrbanInnovation #InterdisciplinaryCollaboration #ResilientSpaces #FutureOfPlanning #OpenDataImpact Tunca Beril Basaran TU Delta Delft University of Technology Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment, TU Delft MSc Urbanism @TU Delft Georg Vrachliotis Angela Rout Kees Kaan Seyran Khademi Gent Shehu Hsiu-Ju Chang Víctor Muñoz Sanz Marija Mateljan Bryan Boyer Fatemeh Mostafavi Taubman College of Architecture Urban Planning, University of Michigan

REDEFINING SMART: ARE WE THINKING BIG ENOUGH ABOUT TECHNOLOGY? Orit Halpern, a renowned historian of science and digital culture, recently shared her insights with THE NEW OPEN about the meaning of 'smart' in our data world. Her award-winning book, "The Smartness Mandate," published by The MIT Press, goes beyond the usual discussions of efficiency, sparking a fresh conversation about intelligence and technology in our lives. Orit challenges us to look at the big picture - how we tell stories about technology, who gets to control our data, and the pressing need for tech solutions that respect everyone's voice without adding to inequality. She encourages us to imagine a future where technology not only shapes our societies but also does so in a way that includes and benefits #everyone. Her vision highlights the importance of architects and designers adopting an interdisciplinary approach, combining #creativity with #technology and the #humanities, to create spaces and solutions that truly reflect the diversity and complexity of #humanneeds. visit: https://newopen.design/ #DesignThinking #InclusiveDesign #FutureOfTech #HumanCenteredDesign #InterdisciplinaryApproach #SmartSocieties #CreativeSolutions #TechForGood #InnovationInDesign #DigitalHumanities Kees Kaan Seyran Khademi Dennis Pohl Angela Rout Georg Vrachliotis Manuela Triggianese Fatemeh Mostafavi Gent Shehu Technische Universität Dresden Marija Mateljan Hsiu-Ju Chang Delft University of Technology Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment, TU Delft

INSIGHTS INTO AUTOGRAPHIC DESIGN with Dietmar Offenhuber on THE NEW OPEN Angela Rout from THE NEW OPEN / Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment, TU Delft, sat down with Dietmar Offenhuber to discuss his innovative approach, "Autographic Design", published by The MIT Press This method reimagines data visualization by focusing on the tangible aspects of data, moving away from traditional representations. Dietmar emphasized the shift toward tangible methods by groups like citizen scientists, highlighting public distrust in standard data presentations. He illustrates how data’s ‘blurriness’ can reveal unexpected urban insights through examples like the New York taxicab dataset. Dietmar advocates for a process-oriented approach in data visualization, prioritizing narrative and inquiry. This conversation challenges us to reconsider our interaction with data, viewing it as a narrative-filled artefact. 🌿 For those intrigued by the intersection of data and design, check out THE NEW OPEN's research-by-conversation project at Delft University of Technology, curated by the Design, Data and Society Group.
