A new study quantifies one of the largest methane leaks ever recorded, which occurred last year at a remote well in Kazakhstan: 🔺 The emissions event began 9 June 2023 and lasted at least 205 days. Scientists estimate it released up to 165,000 tonnes of methane. In the near-term, that amount of methane has the same climate impact as 2.9 million cars driven for a year. 🚗 🔺 The leak was first detected by scientists at Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV), SRON Netherlands Institute for Space Research, IMEO and Kayrros. IMEO observed the emissions as part of the Methane Alert and Response System, which uses satellite data to notify governments and companies of emissions. 🔺 The study illustrates how a diverse array of methane-sensitive satellites can be combined to reconstruct and quantify emissions from sustained leaks. 🌍 The new era of methane monitoring from space, boosted by international initiatives such as the Methane Alert and Response System (MARS) of the UNEP and new methane satellite missions such as MethaneSAT and Carbon Mapper, will be crucial for the detection and quantification of large methane leaks around the world. 🔎 UNEP’s IMEO exists to make this methane data actionable so governments and companies can #CutMethane at scale. Op 27 juni mogen in totaal negen onderwijsteams van mbo-scholen, hogescholen en universiteiten de Nederlandse Onderwijspremie in ontvangst nemen tijdens het ComeniusFestival. De Nederlandse Onderwijspremie is de hoogste onderscheiding in het middelbaar beroepsonderwijs en hoger onderwijs. De premie wordt uitgereikt aan onderwijsteams ter waardering van, en als impuls voor, onderwijsvernieuwing en –verbetering van het mbo, hbo en wo. Tijdens de uitreiking wordt bekendgemaakt of de teams 500.00 euro, 800.000 euro of 1,2 miljoen euro ontvangen voor hun innovatieve project. PLATO receives its first "eyes". 🛰 👀 The European Space Agency - ESA’s PLATO (Planetary Transits and Oscillation of Stars) #space observatory is currently being fitted with cameras at OHB's Oberpfaffenhofen site. Three have already found their place on the optical bench, twenty-three are still to follow. PLATO's mission objective is to search for #exoplanets, i.e. planets outside our solar system. We can see numerous stars ✨ from Earth, but so far we only know for a few of them whether they have planets in their habitable zone. PLATO is being built to change this. However, even PLATO cannot see the planets directly as they are too dark. Instead, the #observatory will target a promising star and observe the changes in its brightness over a long period of time. If the brightness of the star decreases significantly at regular intervals, this is a sign of a passing planet. This so-called transit method can not only be used to detect the presence of exoplanets, but also to calculate their orbital period, their radius and the inclination of their orbit in relation to the line of sight. In combination with ground-based observations of the stellar radial velocity, it is possible to determine the mass and density of the exoplanet and make assumptions about its composition. PLATO is scheduled for launch in 2026.
