#FridayPhoto: On a recent trip to India, Executive Director Andre de Freitas turned the camera on himself, and the team from Solidaridad Asia and farmers at the Nico Roozen Centre of Excellence for Regenerative Agriculture in Sehore, Madhya Pradesh. He captured the infectious energy at the gathering, and met farmers, like Mahesh Patel, who shared their experience of adopting regenerative farming. The practices are helping farmers reduce their spending on synthetic fertilizers and pesticides — replacing them to a large extent with vermicompost and biopesticides — and restores the quality of their soil. Andre was impressed by the Centre’s impact: “Regenerative agriculture isn’t just a trend, but a necessity for sustainable food systems worldwide. It holds the potential to restore ecosystems, enhance biodiversity, and improve the livelihoods of farmers, ensuring food security for future generations.” Read more about regenerative agriculture here: https://lnkd.in/dW3HGXzP **** #RegenerativeAgriculture #Regenerative #SustainableAgriculture #SmallScaleFarming #SmallScaleAgriculture #Vermicompost Shatadru Chattopadhayay, Dr.Suresh Motwani

Traders are an important part of artisanal & small-scale gold mining (ASM) supply chains, but the informality of the sector makes their work difficult. We're proud to partner with IMPACT & Solidaridad North America on this work to understand ASM gold supply chains. Read more below!
In Côte d’Ivoire, traders play a crucial role in the artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASM) ecosystem, providing financing, equipment, and essential goods to mining communities. Yet, they often struggle within a complex and informal market landscape. Recognizing the role of traders in the ASM gold supply chain, IMPACT and Solidaridad Network, through the Scaling Up project funded by the European Partnership for Responsible MineralsEPRM RVO, are engaging traders to explore what truly motivates them, including: 👉 Are traders motivated to sell into formal, legal international supply chains? 👉 How willing are they to support miners in meeting the expectations of international buyers around due diligence and responsible production? To enhance traders' involvement in responsible sourcing, it is essential to offer clear incentives that align with their operational realities and economic interests. Read more ⬇️

Great post on the transformative power of #biochar in Uganda & teamwork between Solidaridad East and Central Africa & Solidaridad Deutschland as the pilot is rolled out. Check out the photos and story in this post from Alex Amanya! https://lnkd.in/gnbgqbYy
The tea value chain is one of the most intensive farming sectors that uses alot of synthetic intense nitrogen based fertilisers. On average, 150 kilograms of nitrogen per ha per year is used in tea fields. This contributes alot to the green house gas emissions with nitrogen emissions having a 273 warming factor compared to carbon emissions. In addition fertilisers are too costly for farmers especially for the small tea growers. In order to reduce the emission footprint of small tea farmers while reducing their cost of crop nutrition, Solidaridad East and Central Africa with funding from the #RSProgrammeTLGNRM is conducting a biochar tea pilot in Uganda. The objective of the pilot is to study the reduction in the use of synthetic fertilisers through biochar. The project team with support from our biochar expert from Solidaridad Deutschland Markus Bier conducted a field training on biochar pyrolysis using tea prunnings. This was conducted with farmers and staff of Mabale Tea Growers in Western Uganda. The biochar was produced using the metal and earth Kontiko systems. The farmers in addition were trained on the inoculation and application process in the tea farming system. The pilot will track the productivity improvements compared to conventional methods of tea crop nutrition. Biochar is a soil improvement intervention that improves water and nutrient retention while supporting increased soil microbial activity and nutrient uptake while reducing nutrient leaching. The pilot in addition is looking at exploring the idea of generating tea biochar carbon credits working with Planboo and Solidaridad Network as the sink managers under the payment for ecosystem services. #FridayPhoto: Digitalization made visible. 📸 In a rugged, hilly country like Colombia, it is sometimes not so easy for our team members to visit every small-scale farmer in person on a regular basis. That's why they made the smart move of setting up a direct line of communication through a WhatsApp channel! 📱 Participants in the "Coffee Farmers to Climate Heroes" project can communicate directly with our project team via WhatsApp. And with the good agroforestry practices they’re implementing, these smallholders can connect with Rabobank's carbon trading platform Acorn. For most small-scale farmers, income from the carbon market was long out of reach, but now the carbon bound up in the trees can be measured and certified at lower cost thanks to satellite technology. And farmers can earn supplemental income for important ecosystem services. 🌱💰 🔍✨ Want to learn more? 🇬🇭 Farmers rise to the climate challenge in Ghana! Like smallholder farmers around the world, erratic rainfall and rising temperatures in Ghana are an existential threat to food security for farmers. The Acting Now project from Solidaridad West Africa is introducing climate-smart agriculture practices to equip 9,000 rice, maize, and vegetable growers with the knowledge and tools they need to thrive in a changing climate. Smallholder farmers have started to implement improved agricultural practices, such as better seed selection, irrigation and pest management, all while reducing their environmental impact. And Solidaridad’s Acting Now project goes beyond training to connect farmers with service providers so they have easier access to essential tools and resources. This not only improves yields but also strengthens local agricultural networks. In building resilience to climate change, Ghana's farmers have become critical player in efforts for a food-secure future.
