Working to increase quality and longevity of life on Earth by catalysing the transition to true regenerative agriculture

Over ons

The Soil Heroes Foundation is a non profit organisation that empowers farmers to transition to regenerative practices in order to: - Restore soil health, biodiversity, water quality and availability and air quality; - Increase the nutritional value of food; - Contribute to a stable climate and healthy planet. We do this by trialling innovative methods and combinations of practices on partner test farm(s) and bringing together the learning with established knowledge to create accessible information for farmers. We focus on - providing proof of practice from partner test farm(s); - sharing knowledge and practical resources; - building networks. The Soil Heroes Foundation is part of the Soil Heroes family. If you are a business and want to learn more about offsetting carbon or insetting emissions with regenerative farmers who can capture carbon in the soil; or are a regenerative farmer who is looking to connect with businesses, visit the Soil Heroes page: https://www.linkedin.com/company/soilheroes/

  • Couldn't agree more Philippe Birker, very well put! We have just completed year 1 of our 3 year nutritional density project - comparing conventional and regenerative practices - linking practice to soil health with the nutritional density of the crop. We'll be sharing all data at the end in the hope to inspire further much needed research into this crucial area. And would love to connect with anyone doing the same.

What is healthy food? That is the question that I asked myself when my partner and I decided a few months ago that I would fully take over the kitchen during my paternity leave. It caused me to dive deep into research around this topic with interesting results. There seems to be general agreement that a healthy diet should not include any processed food. Eating a wide variety of 20-30 different fruits and vegetables per week is also very established and not disputed. Whether gluten and lactose should be part of a healthy diet was debated in research more than I expected. It seems to come down to the individual context here. The same goes for the consumption of fish and meat; it depends on the context, the type of fish or meat, portion sizes, and cooking methods. What amazed me was the lack of focus on how our food is grown. For me, it is a no-brainer that this has a major influence, but it is not mentioned in most articles, blogs, podcasts, and even books about healthy eating. Especially regarding nutrient density and health benefits from regeneratively grown produce, we still seem to lack a lot of data and research. I know that the Bionutrient Food Association & Edacious, PBC are working on this in the US, as well as RHEA - Regenerative Healthcare European Association and Soil Heroes Foundation in Europe. I also know that some academic papers from the US have been published on this, but we need more. I was delighted yesterday to see the study below recently conducted by farmer Herb Young; it clearly shows the health and nutritional benefits of regenerative citrus compared to conventional ones. If we want to increase consumer awareness about the health benefits of regeneratively grown produce, then we need a lot more of this research with a more scientific context, though. If you know of any more projects working on this, especially within Europe, please drop me a private message or comment below, I would love to connect.

“One day, we believe that we’ll be able to sit back and look across a landscape teaming with nature. The winter landscape will no longer be coloured brown by large cold fields of dead earth, but will be criss-crossed by trees and hedges, and green with cover crops that will be supporting a myriad of wildlife. Farming will no longer be a bone of contention, and people will again become proud of their farming communities for providing healthy, tasty, nutritious food as well as investing in nature and supporting them to reduce climate change. Because in the end, we believe nature holds the key to its own restoration. That’s why we work with nature, rather than against it.” - says Mellany Klompe-Vonk and Jeroen Klompe of the Soil Heroes Foundation in The Netherlands. Seeing my 5th book ‘Islands In A common Sea: Stories of Farming, Fishing and Food Around the World’ published by Meze Publishing Limited come to life on film is nerve wracking, unique, truly wonderful and exciting all in equal measure. Colin Ramsay the Director at DragonLight Films is a kindred spirit. So passionate and informed, Colin is a deep visionary and absolutely enthused by fundamental and significant, positive change. Above all ethical, creative and humble, and I can’t wait to see his little mini adaptations of some of the wondrous chapters from my book. This is a massive risk for me, but I hope justified in the hope that this personal journey will become big and meaningful amongst a crowded market of creativity around the delicate subject of food provenance. This is different. This is a celebration. A celebration of GOOD people doing GOOD things. So stay tuned, join the ride, and sign up to my newsletter to find out more. KLOMPE FARM AND THE SOIL HEROES FOUNDATION WORKING WITH NATURE IN THE NETHERLANDS “It’s been a long journey of trial and error to get to where we are today, and the more we work with nature, the more we realise we need to learn. Today we sit on a cliff edge of climate change and biodiversity loss. But as entrepreneurs, we are optimists! We strongly believe that we can still turn the situation around. We need systemic change as a society, but also in our food system. We need farming to shift away from the conventional model and move to a regenerative system, which is why we set up the Soil Heroes Foundation in 2019. The mission of the Soil Heroes Foundation is to trial and test regenerative farming practices, then share these with farmers to inspire and motivate them to shift their own farming systems towards regenerative models. We also want to show the food industry and politicians what is possible: that farming regeneratively on a large scale is achievable. One day, we believe that we’ll be able to sit back and look across a landscape teaming with nature. That’s why we work with nature, rather than against it.“ - Says Mellany and Jeroen Klompe in The Netherlands in Islands In A Common Sea by Jenny Jefferies and published by Meze Publishing Limited Islands In A Common Sea is a 288 page hardback and retails at £35 and is available from all good book shops and online via Amazon, Meze Publishing and www.jennyjefferies.co.uk Out now all over the world! Working on nature’s comeback story 🌱🪸🐠♻️ || Co-founder Sumthing

Yesterday we spent the day at our partner Soil Heroes Foundation where Mellany Klompe-Vonk gave us a lesson in regenerative agriculture. It's incredible to see the benefits of working together with nature, instead of against it. Healthy soils capture carbon, boost biodiversity and are much more climate resilient. The pictures of water management after heavy rainfall in conventional managed soil versus regenerative managed soil speak for themselves. Shifting towards regenerative agriculture is not done overnight, and the brave pioneers waving goodbye to extractive practices can use a bit of support in this transition. We're excited to support the Klompe farm by planting biodiversity lanes, that an army of thousands and thousands of natural repellents call home. Together, we've flown drones and installed sum timelapse cameras so that we'll give you a front-row seat of the flowers about to start blooming over the next few months. Stay tuned 🌸
