🌿⚡ Harnessing renewable energy for resilient food systems 🌱🌍 A recently published opinion piece co-authored by Simon O'Connell, CEO of SNV, and Jacqueline Novogratz, CEO of Acumen, highlights critical insights into the global agri-food system's role in fossil-fuel emissions and the urgent need for sustainable solutions. Renewable energy use in regenerative agriculture is increasingly emerging as an option to enhance soil quality, preserve water, and reduce carbon emissions. However, it can be inaccessible to smallholder farmers worldwide, who remain disproportionately affected by the climate crisis and the breakdown of food systems. What is required: 💸 Financing instruments designed to meet the needs of smallholder farmers. 🌞 Increased adoption and scaling of renewable-energy technologies. 🌍 A shift in thinking about agriculture and energy, moving towards a broader framework. Now more than ever, we need the moral imagination to better harness the tools available to tackle pervasive inequalities and the climate crisis. It’s not just about speeding up; ensuring quality is paramount. While there’s considerable talk about accelerating the achievement of safely managed sanitation (SMS), SNV’s Antoinette Kome highlighted that the path to progress isn't straightforward. In the face of treatment plants breaking down and falling into disrepair, Kome emphasised that we must not focus solely on technological innovation. It’s crucial to involve a diverse range of stakeholders in sanitation decision-making processes. Further, we must address behaviours throughout the entire sanitation service value chain to make sustainable progress. ➡ For further info, read nine case studies on faecal sludge and waste management, highlighting why holistic approaches to the sanitation challenge is needed: on.snv.org/3KV5R6N A big thank you to the World Health Organization, UNICEF, WaterAid, and other development partners in Nepal for organising this much-needed forum! 🚽💡 #Sanitation #QualityOverSpeed #InclusiveDecisionMaking #SustainableDevelopment
