🌍 Today, SNV co-hosts the third Humanitarian Energy Conference (HEC) with the Global Platform for Action (GPA)⚡️ Key takeaways from the event today include insights shared by JOHN NJOGU, Humanitarian Energy Advisor SNV, on promoting Productive Use of Electricity in the Kakuma and Kalobeyei Settlement, with a focus on increasing access to finance through collaboration with financial institutions and associations. 💡 Additionally, Laura Clough, SNV's Global Technical Advisor, moderated a panel on sustainable delivery models for clean cooking. She emphasised the importance of market-based approaches in displacement settings, highlighting how collaboration with local businesses and communities can help establish supply chains for energy products and generate demand. The insights today reflect progress toward #SDG7, but it's clear we must keep focusing our efforts to truly Leave No One Behind, especially for communities living in displacement settings. #HEC #HumanitarianEnergy #LeaveNoOneBehind

On 26 September, a groundbreaking moment unfolded in Shinyanga, Tanzania, with the launch of the country’s first-ever Occupational Health and Safety guidelines tailored specifically for sanitation workers. 🤝 📈 This achievement stems from a collaborative effort between the government, development partners, and the hardworking lobby of the Watu Kazi Group, a pioneering group of seven manual emptiers who gained government recognition and became officially registered last year. Today, the official database of manual emptiers has grown to 70 sanitation workers across the country. 👷♂️💪 Why does this matter? Sanitation workers are the backbone of urban health and safety, tirelessly working to ensure our cities remain clean and habitable. The development of these guidelines marks a significant leap towards recognising their invaluable contribution and ensuring their work is conducted safely and with dignity. 🌏 👉 As we observe #UrbanOctober, let's spotlight the critical importance of decent work conditions for these unsung heroes who play a pivotal role in safeguarding the health and safety of city populations. Congratulations to the Government of Tanzania for elevating the profession of sanitation work. For the latest on SNV's work with emptiers in Tanzania, contact Olivier Germain Leyla Khalifa SNV's work with emptiers is part of a global initiative to improve the work conditions of sanitation workers as a crucial part of progressing urban sanitation and health. 🌿 We are pleased to launch our 𝗣𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗣𝗮𝗽𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗻 𝗥𝗲𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗔𝗴𝗿𝗶𝗰𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲, addressing the urgent need for a transformative approach to agricultural practices. 🧭 As we navigate an increasingly complex landscape, the conventional methods of food production and distribution are proving inadequate to meet the demands of our growing population and the intricate ecosystems upon which we rely. 🌍 This position paper presents a comprehensive vision for regenerative agriculture, a holistic approach that enhances food production while restoring our planet’s ecosystems. It emphasizes the interconnections between soil health, biodiversity, water management, and social equity. 💡 The paper highlights the critical need for a shift in our agri-food systems and the potential of regenerative practices to deliver sustainable food security while preserving our environment. We advocate for collaborative efforts that engage farmers, policymakers, the private sector, and communities to co-create effective and adaptable solutions to local contexts. 🤝 At SNV, we believe that embracing regenerative agriculture will foster resilient food systems that support the livelihoods of smallholder farmers, empower communities, and ultimately contribute to a more equitable and sustainable world. We acknowledge our partners for their commitment to scaling and embedding this practice. 🌱Together, let’s commit to rethinking our agricultural practices and prioritizing the health of our planet for future generations. At SNV, we're committed to developing inclusive markets for sustainable energy, empowering communities, and fostering equitable livelihoods for all. 💡 As we gear up for the #GOGSFE24 event, we'll be highlighting the importance of financing for locally-led companies. Martijn Veen, SNV's Global Sector Head of Energy, stresses the need for an adaptive approach in supporting these businesses. He explains: 'This requires an honest reflection amongst grant-makers and investors on how we can support locally-led companies to build a solid company with operational and commercial stability vs getting caught up in numbers and the hype of scale. Do current financial instruments incentivise the right processes for sustainable growth? Do they meet the needs of locally-led companies or of the financiers? And do investors have the right expectations from the market?’ 💬 Join us and our partners EEP Africa and Acumen at the GOGSFE side event: 𝗛𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝗧𝗮𝗹𝗸: 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗰𝗹𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗴𝗮𝗽𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆-𝗹𝗲𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗲𝘀? 🗓️ When: Thursday, Oct 10 | 8:30 AM - 9:45 AM GMT 3 📍 Where: Kenyatta International Convention Centre, Nairobi 🔗 Learn more: https://lnkd.in/d8XHpWRK #InclusiveFinance #SustainableEnergy #LocallyLed #ImpactThatMatters

🔥 Clean energy innovations at Kakuma boost opportunities🔥 Access to clean cooking remains a major challenge in refugee camps and low-income communities. Traditional cooking methods contribute to environmental degradation, economic hardships, and serious health risks. The Market-Based Energy Access (MBEA) project, funded by Energising Development (EnDev), is tackling this challenge head-on in Kakuma Refugee Camp, Kalobeyei Integrated Settlement, and surrounding host communities. One inspiring story comes from Areymo Jane, a Kakuma resident who joined the Stove Production Unit (SPU) in 2019. Her journey from an artisan to a specialist in iron fabrication has empowered her to support her family and gain financial independence. 📑 Learn more about Areymo Jane's story and download a new project report 'Empowering communities through local innovation': 🔗 https://lnkd.in/eHrnzZv7 #HumanitarianEnergy #GOGSFE #HEC #SustainableDevelopment

In the face of climate change, communities worldwide are compelled to rethink and reinvent how they access water. 🚰The necessity for households to explore alternative water sources has never been more critical, especially as some of these sources raise significant health and safety concerns. This pressing scenario demands immediate attention and action to ensure that coping mechanisms – at the household level – do not inadvertently compromise health and nutrition outcomes or undo progress towards fundamental rights. 🤝The dynamic nature of climate-induced challenges requires innovative and rapid responses. The collaborative hub approach, pioneered by SNV and Upward Spiral, is a testament to the power of collective action. By facilitating access to insights across regions, this model accelerates the development and scaling of effective behaviour change initiatives. 📚As professionals, we have a significant role in this collective journey. Sharing knowledge, fostering collaborations, and driving innovations are tools for ensuring that water, our most precious resource, remains safe and accessible for all, even in the most challenging climate scenarios. Chief Executive Officer at SNV

Today at #UNGA, I had the great privilege of joining discussions on Inclusive Finance for Development. The event celebrated the progress made in financial inclusion over the past 15 years, with an emphasis on its critical role in advancing the Sustainable Development Goals, acknowledging the immense contribution made by Her Majesty, Queen Máxima of the Netherlands. The discussions highlighted how financial inclusion is critical to transforming lives — enabling the empowerment of people to build resilience, invest in their futures, and strengthen their communities. And it's abundantly clear that there is still much progress to be made..... As Ajay Banga put it so clearly, there are four critical elements to enabling this: > Enable the securing of IDs for all > Provide more inclusive access to bank accounts > Encourage and enable account usage - build a transaction history > Harness the transaction history as a means to enable access to credit We at SNV, along with a plethora of partners, are increasingly engaged with entrepreneurs across Africa and Asia to expand access to finance within and across the agri-food, energy, and water sectors. Through the Ministerie van Buitenlandse Zaken supported Dutch Fund for Climate and Development (DFCD), in collaboration with FMO - Dutch entrepreneurial development bank, we're catalysing innovative partnerships that can enable climate adaptation, build resilience and protect landscapes by supporting entrepreneurs to derisk their businesses and unlock climate finance investments. As I mentioned to Minister Reinette Klever, this partnership represents a great example of Dutch leadership in #InnovativeFinance which can help to mobilise further cooperation and collaborations with the #Netherlands, which are in all our interests. Over the course of this week at UNGA our central message has been clear: with #ODA pressures, the accelerating climate crisis and progress towards the SDGs lagging way behind, we need to further innovate how we collaborate across the investment spectrum to enable more inclusive, better tailored financial flows to arrive at where they're most needed. The DFCD gives us a strong platform to learn and build from. It was a huge pleasure to provide His Majesty King Willem-Alexander a glimpse into SNV's current work, how we have evolved as a global development partner and built from our Dutch roots from the days when HRH Prince Claus (his father) was our Chairman, and hear the pride for the journey we've been on and encouragement for our work. And wonderful seeing ex-SNVers Yoka Brandt and Birgitta Tazelaar #inclusivefinance #GenderEquality #ImpactThatMatters #frontiermarkets #SDGs #collaboration

🌍 Locally-led climate action – Are we doing enough? 🌱 As climate change intensifies, the call for locally-led action grows stronger. Tailored, local solutions are gaining attention as an effective way forward. During #NYClimateWeek, we reflect on the vital role of local communities in tackling climate change. In Uganda, smallholder farmers are leading the way through initiatives like the Climate Resilience Agri-Business for Tomorrow (CRAFT), which enhances their ability to adapt amid environmental challenges. 🌾🌦️ Now is the time to amplify support for locally-led initiatives that are proving effective in making sustainable impacts. It’s about translating plans into real, grassroots action that addresses the needs of those most vulnerable to climate change. 🤝💡 🔗 Learn more in a recently published blog: https://lnkd.in/etc3eiV4 Let’s work together to foster partnerships rooted in trust and collaboration, ensuring that local voices are integral to our climate solutions.🌍✨ Svetlana Frenova, PhD #ClimateConversations #ImpactThatMatters #LocallyLedAction
